Our team wants to make sure our minbot is legal. Is the minibot allowed to be longer than 12"?

I know the it says 12x12x12, but it says yyou test it by putting it in a box. an it lean up against the sides?

Re: Minibot dimensions

Technically it can be 1.4 feet long as long as you can still fit it inside the box.

EDIT: I guess it could even be longer if you went from opposite corners. I was thinking square root of 2 for opposite edges.

Re: Minibot dimensions

I think it says it pretty clearly:
<G41> MINIBOTS may not exceed a 12” x 12” x 12” volume.
Violation: The TOWER on which the MINIBOT is DEPLOYED is disabled. If the MINIBOT is
not deployed on a TOWER, then the ALLIANCE’s TOWER upon which the highest RACE
SCORE was earned will be discounted

Re: Minibot dimensions

Obviously, they can't declare a particular side of your minibot to be the "bottom" or anything, so there shouldn't be any issue at all with shoving it in from corner to corner. If you can fit the 12x12x12 box fit around it in any way, you're good. I believe it must fit within this volume at all times (including auto, teleop, and its operation during the end game) but I can't imagine they'll get too picky about that.

Re: Minibot dimensions

Technically, the robot can legally be 20.78" long (12" x sqrt of 3), but that would require the minibot to be needle thin at the ends that touch opposite corners. It is also somewhat impractical, since the deployment line is at 18". You could deploy at an angle, but your hostbot might still be in contact with the minibot when it climbed above 18", resulting in a penalty.

Re: Minibot dimensions

In the rules the Minibot must be within a 12"x12"x12" cube for the entire match...

<R91> (Blue Box):
"MINIBOTS will be inspected for the volume constraint by being placed in a five-sided box with internal dimensions of 12" x 12" x 12". If the lid (the sixth side of the cube) does not seat properly, the MINIBOT does not pass this part of the MINIBOT inspection."

So, as long as your minibot fits within that box, you're legal. So, yes, the maximum dimension can be longer than 12," as long as it fits within "The Box."

Re: Minibot dimensions

Ok, i don't know why you guys are interpreting it this way. sure, if you tilt the minibot it might fit in the box correctly, but YOUR MINIBOT CANNOT EXCEED THE 12 X 12 X 12 VOLUME AT ANY POINT IN TIME DURING THE MATCH. I do not get why you guys think this will work out at the competition. Feel free to bash me with your reasoning
EDIT: nevermind, i get it now

Re: Minibot dimensions

Without an official ruling from the GDC, i wouldn't design a minibot longer than 12", since it has to be 12"x12"x12" through the entire match. The rules don't say that the minibot can be 16.97"x.01"x12" during the match, it says 12"x12"x12".

Re: Minibot dimensions

Guys,
The official answer is your minibot in all configurations must fit and remain inside a 12" cube.
<R97> The MINIBOT will be inspected for compliance with the dimension constraints specified in Rule <R91> by being placed within a Sizing Device that has inside surface dimensions consistent with the rule. Other than resting on the floor of the Sizing Device, no part of the MINIBOT can break the plane of the sides or top of the Sizing Device during size inspection.

At the beginning of inspection your minibot will go into the box and be weighed before proceeding with inspection.
