Rookie All-Star Award. (What should I expect?)

I will be attending my first and only FRC Tournament very soon and although I am very excited, I have no idea what happens at the tournament. Do the judges interview each team individually? And if so, it is at the interview that we give them the materials that we want to give them for the RAS? Also if a team wins the award, does that qualify them for nationals?

As regards the RAS, the judges should at least stop by your pit at least once. That's when you give them any materials you have for them. I don't think there is a designated interview time, but I'll let the judges answer that (I've never been a judge for FRC).

If a team wins RAS, they are qualified for the Championship Event. They still have to pay and get there, but there will be a slot for them.

Re: Rookie All-Star Award. (What should I expect?)

jtl,
If you are a NASA Grant team you are required to apply for the Chairman's even though rookie teams cannot be considered. Is this what you are asking about?

6.4.2 First-Year (Rookie) and NASA Grant Teams:
Because the Chairman’s Award recognizes sustained excellence and impact, not just a one
(1) year team effort, it is not possible for a first year (rookie) team to receive this honor.
FIRST does, however, invite and encourage rookies to develop a Chairman’s Award
submission which may be evaluated by the judges determining the winner of the Rookie All-
Star Award. This submission will document where the team started its FIRST journey and
will also provide background for documenting the results of the team’s efforts – it will be a
great way to start the team’s efforts to win the Chairman’s Award.
Rookie Teams: If you prepare a Regional Chairman’s Award submission, print a copy to give
the Judges when they visit you at your Pit Station. Judges will not be viewing them online.
Teams receiving NASA Grants must provide a copy of this submission as part of the grant.
All teams are encouraged to print a copy of their final submission for their records and to
confirm for themselves that the submission was accepted.

Rookie All Star will come from the judges who will talk to your team in the pits and will observe you throughout the competition. They are looking for how you work as a team, how you can express your experience, etc. They want to know what you did wrong and how you overcame the problems as well as how you did things correctly. They also observe you on the field, in the stands and may take input from other teams or volunteers.

Judges usually walk around the pits in twos, wear blue shirts and carry clipboards. When two come into your pit, adults should take two giant steps out of the pit. Judges want to talk with students. If they need something answered by your mentor they will wave them over. they are also understanding enough to know that if need to get to a match they will come back.

Surely you mean the international Championship in St. Louis?

If so, then yes, you get to go to the Championship in St. Louis.

If you want to be considered for RAS, then remind the whole team that everyone is watching, all the time. You are delusional if you believe otherwise.

Be as GP as you can, all of you. Too many kids in the pits? Send them out to help other teams (they like to build robots, right?). Got robot parts? Listen to the PA in the pits, and when other teams ask for something you have, dispatch a student to deliver it ASAP. And so on.

That might not get you to win, but it will not hurt, for certain.

Re: Rookie All-Star Award. (What should I expect?)

Thanks for the quick responses guys. We are a very small team of 7 students so I don't think we will have a problem of too many students. I have also heard it is recommended that I should do the Chairman's Award Submission. Is that correct?

If you are a NASA grant team, it may be a requirement of your grant. Rookies are not eligible for Chairman's otherwise. Please check tha Administration Rules, Awards for full info on what is available and what the requirements are.

Only first-year teams are rookies, correct? Our team has the strange impression that second year teams are also rookies.

Re: Rookie All-Star Award. (What should I expect?)

So the Los Angeles tournament just ended and our team did not win the award. We didn't get enough judge attention and I found it hard to do so with 7 students in the team. Most of us were working on the robot anyways. But in the end, we did finish 2nd in the tournament. Thanks to everybody who contributed to this thread

Re: Rookie All-Star Award. (What should I expect?)

Our team didn't win RAS at Michigan State Championships, but qualified for championships anyway, are we still eligible for RAS at the championships?

Yes. There are no prerequisite awards at Championship other than Website, WFA, and Chairman's.
