Re: Brunswick Eruption 10 Nov 5, 2011

The following email was sent to teams.
---------------------------------------------------------
Aloha Teams,

Things are heating up here in North Brunswick as the tenth annual Brunswick Eruption nears. We would love to have you join us for this year’s event. Dust off your 2011 FRC robot to play some LogoMotion or come on down to volunteer.

We have a number of exciting events and activities planned for this year’s competition. Aside from the usual Evil Sundae Contest, which once again will be filled with delicious ingredients, teams will be able to attend conferences for free this year, participate in our new Aloha contest or nominate a mentor for the Mike Wade Memorial Award.

Basic Details:
What: Brunswick Eruption 10
When: November 5, 2011
Where: North Brunswick Township High School, NJ
Registration Fee: $200; $100 discount with one pre-rookie; Free with two or more pre-rookies. Pre-rookies enter free.
More info and sign-up: http://be.raiderrobotix.org/

Conferences / Workshops

“Dynamic Mentoring” by Paul Kloberg
Join FIRST superstar Paul Kloberg for a presentation on innovative mentoring techniques.
Paul will show attendees how to inspire students to become leaders themselves and “let go” of the wheel and trust students to git’er done on their own as much as possible.

Paul Kloberg has been involved in FIRST since 2000. He has fulfilled many roles including Senior Mentor, FTA, regional committee member and head coach of teams 303 and 1403. Paul was Brunswick Eruption’s first “Big Kahuna” award winner. He was also the recipient of the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award in 2007 and Volunteer of the Year award at the NJ Regional in 2003. Paul’s effects can be felt across the tri-state region due to his exuberant nature and tireless dedication to numerous teams across FIRST. Paul lives by the quote, “sure VIPs are important to FIRST, just not as important as MIPs”.

“Winning Game and Design Strategies” by Shaun McNulty
Join Shaun McNulty for a presentation on success strategies used year after year. From the simple techniques used during the robot build process to the complex strategies on Einstein, Shaun will explain Team 25’s journey. In 2006, Team 25 won 45 out of the 50 matches and finished second in the world. After going through two regionals undefeated, they repeated it again in 2010. In this workshop, Shaun will reveal the success principles employed by top teams along with the major pitfalls they avoid. Learn how to successfully dominate the field and be consistent on the field every year.

Shaun McNulty has been involved with Team 25 since its inception. Starting off as a student, Shaun was inspired and dragged into the vortex of FIRST. Since then, he has been an integral part of the team. Shaun’s meticulous attention to technical details along with his talent to critically analyze a FIRST game has provided team 25 with a considerable advantage over the years. While on the field, Shaun coaches student drivers to pay attention to the right details and follow a set of instructions leading to many wins. You will not want to miss this workshop since this is the first time Shaun will uncover 25’s various success strategies that any FIRST team can use!

NEMO (Non Engineering Mentor Organization) Workshop
NEMO will be open to adult mentors, including engineers, teachers and college students (who may be the only mentors on their teams) who are involved with all the non-engineering aspects of the FIRST Robotics programs. It is mainly a support group and information exchange for those mentors who help with all the behind-the-scene glue that hold the teams together including mentor recruitment and retention, travel (hotels, endless meals), parent involvement, fundraising, business plans, public relations, community service, dealing with the FIRST logistics. We hope to seek out all the NEMs who don't realize they are part of a large community. -firstnemo.org
This workshop will be facilitated by Karin Kloberg. Karin has been a longtime mentor of 303 and 1403. Assisting Paul Kloberg in all his FIRST endeavors, Karin knows exactly what it is like to be a mentor on a team. Not to mention that she keeps Paul from going insane! Karin has also volunteered for FIRST at many levels including being a referee for many years. Because of her background, Karin has a lot to offer from a NEMO workshop!

Awards and Activities

Aloha Award
This award encompasses all aspects of FIRST, Team 25, and Brunswick Eruption with an “Aloha” spirit. Teams are given a set of objectives and earn points for each task they complete. The challenges are designed to allow teams to grow as a group and show their own Aloha spirit by spreading the word of FIRST culture in their communities and at Brunswick Eruption. Examples of challenges include: decorating your team’s pit, participating in online social media, attending conferences, recruiting new FIRST teams, and introducing new members of your community to FIRST by having them attend BE. Find out more here: http://be.raiderrobotix.org/alohaaward.php

Mike Wade Memorial Award
Mike Wade of NASA Goddard was a longtime friend of FIRST and responsible for the growth of off-season competitions in the northeast. Mike Wade represented hard work, persistence and ruthless dedication. This award will honor a mentor that embodies these same characteristics. To be eligible, teams must submit an essay of less than 600 words explaining how their chosen mentor goes above and beyond the call of duty for their team. All submissions must be made to brunswickeruption@gmail.com by October 30th.

Evil Sundae Contest
As usual, Brunswick Eruption’s premiere wildest and vilest party - The Evil Sundae contest will now be webcasted and held on the field! An Evil Sundae is ice-cream mixed with some, shall we say, “non-traditional” ingredients that change every year. Each team nominates one member from their team to participate in this contest. The goal? To eat, and keep down, the sundae in the fastest time possible. Each participant is allowed to bring a spoon of their choosing to use in conquering this evil dessert. We provide the barf bags. Participation in this contest is purely at the participants risk and we take absolutely no responsibility!

Other awards include the Minibot Challenge, Best Autonomous mode and many more! More details: http://be.raiderrobotix.org/awards.php

Once again, the BE team will be taking a stab at rule modifications (to be announced) and changing bits and pieces of the 2011 game to make it even more exciting and keep you on the edge of your seat. Ready to come? Can’t wait to get started? Awesome! Begin before the doors even open by planning and gathering enough supplies to compete in the 2011 Aloha Award, a highly interactive competition that will have teams striving to earn the most points as they complete a set of predefined objectives.

Sign up now at the BE webpage: http://be.raiderrobotix.org/register.php

We can’t wait to celebrate the 10th year of Brunswick Eruption with you!

Mahalo,
The Brunswick Eruption Team

Will this talk be videotaped or recorded? It sounds very interesting and I'm sure there are lots of people who would enjoy learning from it who are unable to make the actual event.

Thanks, Bryan

Seconded, any opportunity to learn from a successful team is helpful to other teams across the country (and beyond). It's excellent to see more teams having seminars, but please document them and make them available to the rest of FIRST.

Unfortunately, at this time there are no plans to record these workshops. However, if the presenters have a powerpoint that they want hosted, we'll gladly do that.

Just a reminder to all the teams attending this year's event--we are holding a food drive for the North Brunswick Food Pantry. The 5 teams who bring in the most food will earn 75 points towards the Aloha Award!

Also, thanks to all the teams that submitted entries to the Mike Wade Memorial Award. It's great to see you all giving your mentors the recognition they deserve!

Thumbs up Re: Brunswick Eruption 10 Nov 5, 2011

Boy, that extra hour of sleep last night really helped, but I'm still exhausted from yesterday. That was one of the most exciting yet nerve-breaking events I've ever been to.

Congratulations to all teams that participated; everyone did a terrific job, and certainly made it a tough competition.

Thanks to 1075, the Sprockets, and 2554, the WarHawks, for being great alliance partners; we couldn't have won without you. I can't imagine what time 1075 got back to Canada last night with not leaving North Brunswick until around 7:00. I lost track of who won the tube-hanging count challenge between us in the eliminations

Also, congrats to finalists 25, Raider Robotix, 369, High Voltage, and 2559, Normality Zero, for being amazing challengers to go up against in the finals. You guys not only had a great strategy, but thought fast on your feet as well. It was an honor to be able to play such an impressive alliance as you.

Furthermore, I would like to say a special thanks to Team 41, one of the most gracious and professional teams I have ever met. Having to withdraw due to a malfunctioning robot is one of the most heartbreaking things that a team will ever have to do, but you did it extremely honorably, and truly embody FIRST's founding concept of G.P.

Last but certainly not least, I would like to additionally thank everybody involved with organizing Brunswick Eruption 10. It was an extremely well ran off-season competition, and one of my favorite competitions to go to overall. Just watching that Evil Sundae Contest is going to give me nightmares until Kickoff. The field was resistant to work, but the FTA's did a tremendous job getting it to cooperate as soon as they could, and made sure that every team was able to play.

Again, thank you and a job well done to all of those who coordinated and participated in B.E. 10, and all of us from 1676, the Pascack Pi-oneers, can't wait to see you all next season.

P.S. Is there any way to get that webcast archived somewhere? There are some action-packed matches that I would love to watch again! And were any of the workshops recorded that could be posted as well?
