What is FIRST?

FIRST to Me

Family, Friends, Inspiration, these are FIRST.
It is something that when done right allows everyone to grow up,
Allows everyone to learn what it is like to be equal,
No Adults, No High Schoolers, No Leaders, No One above the other,
There are only Friends and Family.

FIRST is intangible ultimately.

No One word can describe it.
Either you get it or you don't.

FISRT is not about Titles or Awards or Medals.
FIRST is about the people in it.
The People are what makes FIRST special.
Some say the Chairman's Award is the most prestigous award in FIRST.
I Disagree.
The Respect and Friendship one earns from other teams by far is the ultimate, most prestigous award anyone can get while being in FIRST.

The People we meet while being a part of FIRST is what makes the program what it has become.
If everyone loses “it”, that intangible gut feeling of what FIRST is, than all will be lost and FIRST will become evreything I hoped it would never become.
This is what FIRST is to me.

Let me know what you all think of what I said and what you think FIRST is.

Very nice Whooper94.
I am willing to bet that there are many out there who would say, “My thoughts exactly”.

My thoughts........

FIRST is an effective catalyst for positive, long overdue change in our society.

Love what you wrote.

I'd just like to add that our team in the past treated newbies like dirt - they were supposed to do all the dirty work, like a hazing thing. We've changed that.

Our team in the past worked in two locations, it became an us vs them that was very volatile. We've changed that.

And to me part of the FIRST experience is getting students who don't have computers at home and wouldn't otherwise be getting this exposure interacting on the computer thru our forums, with the software, or other technology...

and less technical students discovering to their amazement that they can be working with machines...

Hey Redhead Jokes,

I like the fact that your team hs made those changes to be more unified and to treat EVERY team member fairly. I think that is an excellent example of what first should be.

As for frequent flyer miles, I stopped flying commercally last September. ....some nonesense about too many metal parts in my body and that whole strip search scenario.

Hey, would the fact that I'm practically a walking hardware store qualify me as a piece of FIRST equipment if I ever found a team?
