How does this latch onto the tower? It appears as if the wheel shafts/positions are fixed...

Ah. It appears to be magnet based. It kind of resembles one of our prototypes.

What kind of switch is that little red/blue one on the left end? Is that a Tetrix switch or a common household light switch?

I just grabbed a bunch of switches at radio shack. Not part of the minibot.

It uses two neodymium magnets. They are still testing so I doin't know what the speeds are.

How big are the magnets and where did you get them?

Not sure if he used the ones I got from Harbor Freight. There is a section around the watch tools in Harbor Freight that has ceramic magnets and 100-250# magnets. They may have used these or purchased neodymium mags somewhere else. I have a note into the mentor for he minibot to come over here and give us an answer.

www.allelectronics.com has a pretty good assortment of neodymium magnets.

Smile Re: pic: Team 1504 minibot final

I found some magnets that we are going to try from McMaster-Carr.
Ultra-High-Pull Neodymium Ring Magnet 1" OD, 1/2" ID, 1/2" Thick, 21.4 Pull lbs. Part # 3360K79
My thought is to add a small bearing in the center and mount it so that it allows the minibot to travel in the vertical plane without falling away from the pole.

There is one magnet in the middle of the mini bot. It is a 52 lb pull neodymium from applied magnets. I got some smaller 27 lb pull ones too, but I threw the 52 ones into the cad mock up so they got used. One word of caution when using these magnets, BE CAREFUL! they are a pain to get apart with no spacers in and can easily draw blood(i know from experience). You shouldn't need anything stronger then a 52 lb pull magnet. We probably could of gotten away with using the 27 on our mini bot.
