Re: 2011 Finger Lakes Regional!

Now that we're getting close (only 22 days!? Can that be? ) could you guys please impart some practical information about your little corner of the universe to an out-of-town team? Like food, of course, and what to do in the evenings. The only info we got from our two RIT'ers is that Walpole has more snow than Rochester, which, while important, is not practical; and that I know how to pronounce Skaneateles, which is practical, but not important.

Re: 2011 Finger Lakes Regional!

RIT is located just off of Jefferson Road... If you leave RIT and hang a right onto Jefferson, you will quickly encounter the magical LAND OF RESTAURANTS. There are tons and tons and tons (and TONS) of places to eat on Jefferson Road, and if you don't want to go that far there are some pretty good restaurants on the northwest corner of campus.

Food at events are run by concession if you didn't preorder.

As to what to do in the evenings... Umm... What are you looking for? You can have a LAN party at Millennium Games (which is immediately before the aforementioned magical LAND OF RESTAURANTS, just north of Jefferson road) -- but you'll pay for the experience with cold, hard cash.

You could go back to your hotel and compare scouting notes, strategize, etc, etc.

What is it that people do during the evenings at FIRST events? I try to get as much sleep as I am able!

Walpole is near Boston, right?
You guys don't even have half the amount of snow Rochester gets (we average over a hundred per year. We're up to 91 inches so far this year). Boston averages around 40ish. It's that stupid snow machine to our North that keep making more of that annoying white stuff almost every day of our winter.
There are lots of resteraunts near RIT because there is a mall area very nearby.
Sadly both the Knighthawks and Amerks are on the road so go there. Thursday I plan on going to Laserquest so you guys are free to tag along (usually only members of 229 take me up on the offer with a few members from 1511 and others as well). Nothing else really comes to mind for entertainment.

Good luck to all,

Ed,

If all the rain we have gotten in Providence was snow, we'd be well over that 100 inch mark . But yes Walpole is just west of Boston.

It's all about location location location. Because we are positioned to the north and west of the lakes we get dumped on while New England is east of the ocean so they don't get as much snow from it (but they do get those nasty Nor'easterners a few times a season).

Skaneateles - skinny atlas. More or less.

Food: I know my team always hits up the all you can eat country buffet. There's also a Buffalo Wild Wings around there. And, as mentioned, the magical land of restaurants is a great place to browse.

Re: 2011 Finger Lakes Regional!

I'd like to think of Walpole as more south than west of Boston, right off of I-95. Just north of the Patriot's football stadium in Foxboro. Official Walpole snow count is 74 inches. We were getting a bunch of nor'easters.

We might take you up on Lasertag, Ed. Our tradition from last year is a monster Monopoly or Risk game every night. (Or Candyland!) Or a trip to the mall. We're coming in a couple of 15-seat vans so driving around isn't a problem.

Regarding food, we knew about restaurants in the area, but there was some debate on if we should get the pre-ordered lunch or go to a local restaurant. Personally I think that going off-campus for lunch is a bad idea. Our RIT'ers didn't know if the concession stands would be open at GFH -- shall we assume they are open? Are they the typical high priced foods?

If it's Old Country Buffet, we have one here in town -- I think most of our kids are not in love with it.

Yes, they are open during FLR.

Yes, they are typical high priced foods.

A good china buffet across the street from Old Country. Pizza can be delivered- but not eaten inside, not bad if the weather is good.
One week from today, it will be done!

Re: 2011 Finger Lakes Regional!

Looks like we may be dodging some snow, hopefully? We had a few more inches this past weekend, but also some rain, and one "weather event" that was rain at the high school that turned to snow as I was driving home one evening.

One silly question: the pits and the field are all in the same space? (I think I remember a youtube video that showed this.) We have to decide for our usual "Shipping Dept!" high cart (yes, it says that on the side; somebody was excited about it years ago), or our low-rider garden cart. I think we can manage robot carrying in and out of the building, but not a pit-field-pit transfer.

That's how the pits are set up. The field is to the right, I guess I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use your high cart.
