I've been dancing around the forums reading posts for quite a while now, and I haven't managed to find exactly what I'm looking for. I am new to the whole programming thing (I work with webpage design) and I dove headfirst into LabVIEW.. My brain hurts and its frustrating. Does anybody a clue where to start? I literally have no experience in this stuff.. at all. I mean zero. Zip. None. Nada. Any starting point would be great.. Thanks..

I guess the first question to ask, is - what exactly do you need? What do you mean as far as a "starting point" is concerned? Are you trying to just learn how to program in LabVIEW, or are you asking how to program something specifically on your robot?

I will tell you this. We will be at BAE as well. We have, what we call our "RAP TEAM" (Robobees Assistance Program" who will be available to give you a hand when we get there. We have two mentors who are experts in LabVIEW. I will make sure that they visit your pit to help with programming issues. If you need any other assistance - mechanical, electrical, etc... we have a complete crew of students and mentors who will be happy to pitch in to help. if you do the examples while you watch you will learn it very quickly

I know that National Instruments has a bunch of tutorials on their website. But this PDF may help to get you started if you not familiar with the language at all. If you have a more specific question you can search their website.

Another site that is good is LabVIEW Mastery @ http://lvmastery.com/ They have some courses that you can take to increase your skills and also some robotics related material.

Well, I want to learn programming in general. Its not urgent that I learn it right now but we only had two programmers on our team and one member had to leave. So now there is one programmer and one mentor who is sort of familiar with LabVIEW but being they are short handed, nobody has time to sit with me and explain it all. I want to be able to help now that the webpage is done and I'm on my own right now as far as learning. So any place where I can start to teach myself would be helpful. I read a ton of tutorials and stuff online but reading an encyclopedia on LabVIEW and then jumping into it apparently isn't working for me. I've read countless things about LabVIEW including the tutorials on their website and I'm failing miserably. I guess I was wondering if there was different way to learn it. I know I'm not the only person in the world that doesn't learn just by reading and playing with the program. Is there an alternative? Maybe an English version of the reading? Lol its literally like reading an encyclopedia focused solely on LabVIEW..DX Helpp??

LabVIEW has tutorials that are actual activities that give you step by step instructions on how to do certain things. I did the tutorial, and it cleared up a lot of stuff (my programming background consists of only textual languages, so the graphical programming concept was sort of scary for me...) One of the tutorial activities walks you through manipulating a sinusoidal wave. It's actually a pretty similar concept to what we applied to our motors' codes. I'm not too sure, but I think the tutorial is given as an option when you open LabVIEW... Hope that helped.

That has links to great resources. *Sigh* Good luck to you, you need it. Trying to program and debug the robot in less than a week is not an easy feat. We have one programmer with 8 years experience in programming and another with 6 (me) on our team and we have been having trouble with some stuff. (Mostly because we were chasing the wrong goals half the time. and disagreements did not help) It is crunch time.


edit: We are using Java, so do not worry about the complexity. We tried to go above and beyond this year. We were pursuing to make a PID loop our selves for about 2 weeks. It did not turn out too well. So we are dropping the PID loop

I think I will attempt at PID loop in the off-season for the 2011 robot. Programming learningwise, you have absolutely no time left to learn more than the very basics before build season ends but no one has much time since its debugging time. Learning how to program is the easy part, learning how to fix the program is not.

If you give me specifics on some of the stuff you want to do, I might be able to help. I learned it last year, and I am in no way an expert. I know some of the basics, motors, joystick, etc. So if you want to know something in those areas fill free to P.M. me. I would say that I did a lot my learning on chief delphi. Just dig long enough while searching for a specific topic. Hope this helps.
