You are correct in that the differences are only the drivers, but you are incorrect on the severity of the situation. The veteran image crashes immediately on the new classmates. No recovery mode. No safe mode. nothing. You'd have to replace the drivers that come in the OEM install package that is on the USB key. Which you might as well just get a new USB key from first. (We tested both this year's USB key and last year's XP recovery image and they both immediately BSoD'd)
Also, to those trying to put linux on the new classmates: Good Luck. The only Linux we could get running was Chrome OS due to it's lack of hardware support. (we believe the wireless card hangs the kernel on most installs [tried ubuntu/debian/dslinux])
