Re: 2011 BAE Granite State Regional

What a roller coaster for Team 20! We went from being a brick for our first four matches (five actually, but one got replayed later on) to hugging each other in the driver station during a match (we didn't know what to do or expect when the thing actually moved...), to being picked by the number one alliance and making our way to the finals! Unbelievable!

I'd like to thank all of those who helped us troubleshoot and solve our problem (apparently Java + CAN + custom driver station = fail???), particularly including the field crew techies, Team 40 for their help and friendliness as graciously professional pit neighbors, and Team 1493 for lending a hand when we needed help most. This really goes to show that if you help someone out, they might just get better and wind up on your alliance helping you rise to the top.

Congratulations to teams 175, 1519, and 176! Those finals were exhilarating and I think they were really symbolic of how this game will continue to play out; it all comes down to the MINIBOT RACE!

And a BIG thank you to Teams 131 and 40 for being the two teams other than ourselves to not give up on us! We knew that if we got our robot working we could contribute to an alliance and we are REALLY appreciative that we got that opportunity despite the problems we had early in qualifications! I think I've learned more from this tournament and this experience than any other experience I have had in FIRST!

Despite our robot issues, 1138 learned a lot and had a great time!

On behalf of my team:

A huge thank you to 811 for their wonderful hospitality and GP!

Congratulations to 175, 1519 and 176 on an awesome win and congratulations to the regional chairman's and engineering inspiration winners teams 166 and 131 respectively.

Finally, my team would have been dead in the the water if it wasn't for the help from FTA Jacob Komar and Brad Miller for their dedication in making our robot functional, Thank You!

Re: 2011 BAE Granite State Regional

69 was very happy to return to such a great regional with intense competition and exciting matches and great teams all around.

Thanks to Teams 1729 and 1073 for being such great alliance partners. We knew we had it tough from the get go, but the matches we ran were amazing and we hope that both teams succeed in their other competitions.

Congrats to 175, 176, and 1519 on the great win.

Also, big shout out to CHOP SHOP!! Matt Soucy, you make programmers everywhere proud and I hope you become a Dean's List winner. Congrats on Chairman's guys, you deserve it.

Thanks to Aaron who helped us out in what was (as programmer) the worst morning I ever had due to the millions of control problems we were having. Your help kept my hair and sanity intact. Thanks again so much!

Good luck to all the teams out there, it was a great regional!

Congratulations to 175, 1519, and 176! You guys were terrific out there. Also congratulations to 166 for their Chairman's award! Without your team's aid early in the competition I doubt we'd have gone as far as we did.

And a special congratulations to 3467! You guys really brought it this year, even under the crazy circumstances you had to put up with. I can't help but think of that one match where it was only us and you and you did all the scoring and demolished the minibot race while we...

And thank you so much to our awesome alliance partners 811 and 3074. You both had awesome robots and were a great load of fun to work with. Two triple digit matches is something to be very proud of in my book. And for the record, our team number is 1058.

I consider any competition where the PVC Pirates don't need to ask for PVC glue via the Pit Announcer a good one.

Are there any pics/vids/specs on the 1058 robot and minibot?

Thanks vance! Working with you guys was amazing in that match and winning by 1 point that was a last second decision made it all more memorable for me!

Hope to play with you guys in St. Louis and you guys will be a force in Virginia!

I don't just say those nice things because you're my boss after all, you really were terrific out there. I'm sorry you weren't feeling particularly well yesterday.

I know a lot of people stopped by our pit to take pictures of the massive gear for our boom, not sure where most of those are now. Our team in the stands took video of ours and most of the matches, so I think we can try to look into getting those up online.

Oddly enough, most people kind of looked over our wheels and focused on our boom primarily. Kind of weird in my opinion. Really goes to show how important pit scouting can be, a lot of the teams who only scout on the field miss some of the most important things.

69 - YOU'RE ALL AWESOME! We know the excitement is mutual to see each other again in Connecticut . 1729, you've been awesome throughout the years and we were so happy to finally be on the same alliance as you!

Of course, congrats to 175 and 176, and a special congratulations to 1519, a team truly dear to us.

Brendan and 3467: I'll remember the reaction to that one-point win for a long time too, I'm just glad we happened to be in the right part of the stands so I had the ability to go down and join the celebration after.

Hopefully our team will get a shot at Connecticut to be able to see everyone in St. Louis! I'll be there alone if not since it's school vacation week . Hopefully I'll find a new team I can stick around with lol.

Good luck in the weeks to come everyone!

Thanks to everyone for a wonderful and exciting tournament. Thanks especially to team 811, without whose hospitality and help we could not be part of FIRST.

The game turned out interesting and fun this year. The finals especially were very exciting. If there had been a prize for most amusing bot, I'm sure we could have won it.

Re: 2011 BAE Granite State Regional

A big congrats out to 175, 1519, and 176 on the win and the same to 131 for EI and 166 for RCA!

I want to thank our alliance partners, 95 and 885, for an unbelievable run through the QFs and SFs. I hope you all enjoyed playing with us as much as we did with you. Those SF matches were some of the most exciting during the elims! I was very impressed how our teams meshed perfectly and everyone played their role...just one minibot too short in the end! Looking forward to playing with you all again in the future!

To my dear friends on 131 and 40, congrats on an excellent showing and tough semi-final matches. Talk about exciting! 131 is going to be a force to be reckoned with now in the future (it's ok, you can keep Rob...I think we will be ok without him ). It was great sharing the same pit aisle with you both and 126, 69, 134...anytime we needed anything, you all were there to lend a hand. Truly amazing.

I am definitely looking forward to playing again in Boston and seeing friends at WPI and CT!

Re: 2011 BAE Granite State Regional

Some interesting takeaways from this weekend, since I don't really want to start studying for my tests this week.

The average winning alliance scored slightly under 44 points. The losing alliance scores are very much skewed towards zero. However, the average losing alliance scored just under 17 points. The first minibot up the tower (without deploying any tubes) could have about 70% of the matches at BAE. In only about 10% of matches did the losing alliance break 40 points.

Attached are plots. The first is is a histogram of winning alliance scores. As you can see, it is relatively normal with a mean of about 44.

The 2nd is a histogram of all alliance scores. You can see that is significantly skewed towards zero.

The final, and perhaps most important, is a cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the losing alliance scores. Essentially, look at the bottom axis and pick a score. Then look up until you meet the red line (the red line is the empirical solution, the blue is the software trying to fit a normal curve to it). Then look over. That is the percentage of matches you would've won if your alliance had scored that many points.

Key takaways:
  • Minibots win matches.
  • To win the average match your alliance only needs to score 17 points.
  • There is about a 30 point gap between the average winning and average losing score... wonder where that comes from... (see item #1)

Re: 2011 BAE Granite State Regional

Thanks to teams 69 and 1073 for being such great alliance partners with us! It's been great working with you, 69, and great to work with 1073 over the years. I hope to see both of you at the BAE GSR Regional again next year.

Also, congrats to 1519, 175, and 176 for their win. I can't pretend that I'm not a bit jealous of 1519's 2-year win streak at GSR, but I'm happy with the way the regional went. Given that my team had a non-functional arm and a non-existent deployer by the end, I think it went as well as it could have for us.

If you are going to BattleCry, we'll see you there!
(Hopefully we will have an awesome arm by then...)
