Those coins were made and distributed by Small Parts, Inc. (one of the most dedicated and visionary suppliers FIRST has had).

At regionals that year they handed them out to team members, then at Nationals in Florida they had a "rube goldberg" style machine which used the coins as inputs.

It was very cool.

I got one of those coins at my first regional (Long Island 2000) and carried it in my wallet for many years.

Haha, I'm doing that to with a safety token that I got from LSR last year, in fact I remember receiving it from one of your students at the end of the regional. (I forget what she said or what it was for but now it's a little memto in my wallet)
