Perhaps, since they already went to two districts, they wanted to give other teams a chance to get points for MSC... or maybe there was something wrong with their robot.

This is exactly what happened. I talked to 2612 after the selections and they said that they wanted to give other teams a chance to gain points because they already had enough. It was an extremely gracious move on their part and should be commended.
