WIFI at St. Louis?

Does anyone know if there will be wifi that I can connect to for my iPod app FRC Tracker 2011? If not, I will need to check into getting access through my cell phone.

Re: WIFI at St. Louis?

A couple of my friends on my team and others were posing this question just yesterday. This was the appropriate web site I found:

http://www.explorestlouis.com/media/...s/wireless.asp

Apparently, the system has support for 4000 users. That means it will likely be pushed to its limits. However, it's at least a good thing that it will be present.

Re: WIFI at St. Louis?

"Because America's Center is designed to accommodate multiple, simultaneous events, the wireless system also can be custom set with different security levels for specific access points and client needs. This means that free access or password-secured access can be set for select areas in the facility."

FIRST might require the Wi-Fi network to be shut down, or at least drastically limited in its availability. That was done in at least one regional venue in order to eliminate interference with the field network.

I never understood this. I was told the field runs on 5ghz which isn't bothered by 2.4.

Alan, you are correct.. In week 1 FLR was devastated on practice day because of RIT's wireless network. In Boston, the wireless was shut completely off.

I would expect the same thing to happen in St. Louis.

In Boston I remember they were going to set up free wireless, which got cancelled, but there were still at least 3 BU networks up. I was connected to the BU Guest network, on the internet.

Re: WIFI at St. Louis?

Far as I understand, RIT has a jamming signal to kill off unauthorized networks and such, and so, it saw the field network as a foreign signal and was killing it at FLR.

Re: WIFI at St. Louis?

I'll clear this up since I was involved in the issue at FLR, and in subsequently making sure it wouldn't be a problem at Waterloo and GTR.

The problem is with the new Wi-Fi bridges on the robots. In "bridge" mode, there is no way to force them to look only for 5GHz networks as there was with the previous years' models. When initially trying to link up to the 5GHz network from the field corresponding to the robot's team number, their mode of operation is to first scan through all the 2.4GHz networks present looking for a match before trying the 5GHz networks.

To compound this, there is some kind of issue where if there are more than a certain number of access points present (not just networks, as multiple AP's can be broadcasting the same SSID), it fills up some internal buffer, and the bridge can't see any networks past that. This results in the bridge never finding the correct 5GHz network to connect to.

The number I've heard that starts happening at is 30, so if more than 30 AP's are present in a venue, whether they're 2.4GHz or 5GHz, the only solution is to shut some of them down.

Re: WIFI at St. Louis?

According to the Championship A-Z document (updated 4/15):

Quote:
Free wireless internet access is now available in the common areas of the America’s
Center. This access is not available on the pit floor. Due to the wireless nature of
FIRST control systems, wireless availability will be evaluated during the course of the
event. Teams will not be allowed to set up their own wireless networks at the
Championship. While we certainly appreciate the positive potential team-created
wireless networks could represent, there is a chance such wireless networks could
interfere with planned activities during the event.
