Precisely !!

The discussion was driven by schools trying to get into animation and I know of a school that considered using it. If you dig around on the internet there doesn't seem to be a lot of usage that I can tell. A side discussion is how schools develop curriculum and pick software to support the curriculum.

Personally I think the hands down best thing for a school to use is Maya. If they don't have any money a runner up would be the most current version of Blender. At a glance, the current version seems to be WAY better than a few versions back.
