There's another long-lasting pattern of alternating between using balls and something else, which works if you don't consider 2009 to be a ball game. Also there's a back and forth between being themed around a sport that goes to 2006(assuming you look at Lunacy as being moon-themed)

2008 was nascar themed, but Nascar isn't what I immediately think of when I think of sports (not that is isn't). Maybe we should look beyond traditional sports and more toward less know sports. I can easily see FIRST doing some sort of game that is heavily dependent on teamwork.
