FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

No, it doesn't exist, not yet. But it could.

Basically, what if every year the citizens of CD put togeather a slideshow of every robot that compeated in the respective season. Do you think we could put togeather a collection of every robot this season? I know that there are people who take pictures of all the robots at their respective comptitions. I figure with just a bit over 2000 teams and .2 seconds per team the slideshow would be under 8 minutes. I don't know if this is possible this late in the year (I dare you to prove me wrong) but if we had a thread open early next year everyone would be able to put pictures in it throughout the entire season. I'm willing to sort, figure out what teams are missing, produce the video, and otherwise manage all logistics (provided no else wants to help me.) The biggest factor is the enormous amount of pictures which are needed.

Anyways, I just thought that it would be a fantastic way to comemorate each season.

Thoughts on this, and/or pictures of this season's robots are welcome. I curently have zero pictures but I'm beginning my quest after IRI (might even take a camera there ).

Now tell me, am I crazy or is this possible?

Probably not every robot, but I bet we could get a good 75%.

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

I think this would be difficult to do after the fact, but with some pre-planning and direct communication with teams, it could certainty be pulled off during the regional season.

Wow, even if every robot got only one second, the slide show would be 33 minutes long.

This would be a cool addition to FRC Designs! This is a great idea that would showoff what FRC is all about. I would be willing to partner with you on this project in the future! Let me know what you think!

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

Sounds like a great idea to me. Teams take pictures of every team at their regional for scouting purposes. We probably have every team from both KC and 10,000 Lakes.

This would be a fun video to watch in the dead time before kick-off next year. If you produce the video, maybe you can talk FIRST into playing it.

This would be really cool to do, a good place for most Michigan teams is Dan Ernst. Here

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

It is a great idea. I have most from Midwest and would love to help out! I wouldn't mind .3-.5 seconds per bot. This way, you get a decent look at each bot, while still being able to keep the video to a decent length. (And I agree, it would be a great addition to FRC Designs).

PS- I think it can be done...

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

I think that a slideshow for this year could probably happen with all the scouting databases out there. I know our scouting team tries to get pictures of every robot at each regional we go to.

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

Great idea, so there's ~60 events in the regular season before champs. So we would need to get at least 1 person from each event to take a picture of EVERY robot there, then just send there files to you (or who ever wants to take the files in) done.

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

This is a fantastic idea! Team 1515 would love to contribute!
I can send you a .zip of all LA Regional robots.
These came from our scouting data this year. We never actually used the images, but I have them on my computer regardless.

If this ever does happen, please email me at msimon@msedesign.net

I may be able to get ahold of pictures of the robots from the Israel (IL) Regional, so if I do so, I will post again.

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

We could try to do one this year but it will be better to try to do this during competition season. We could try to use TBA and get website links for teams and dig for photos but that would be the hard way.

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

Hey guys, I'm glad you like the idea, that's the first step to making it happen. Even though it's pretty late this year I really think we can pull it off. It would be a shame to miss the 20th anniversary year.

Other ideas I had but didn't put in the opening post:

-having 2 or 4 robots showing on the screen at the same time to decrease video length for part of the time.
-having the teams in number order with their number in a corner of the screen.
-highlighting the world champions at the end of the video.
-intermittently having video of robots actually playing (think less than 5 second increments)
-Having one of Dean's speeches in the background (Think hearing "and one day some of these kids might just change the world." then Bam! the World Champion Robots)

Of course, we'll need pictures first. I'm thinking that a large mix of types of pictures would be good. Some posed like on ship day, some in the pits with people working on them, some in action on the field, etc.

I love your website and I agree it would greatly increase content. I think once it was finished it would probably be published to CD so everyone has excess to it as a promotional tool. That said we could defiantly get all the pictures individually to you for FRC designs and probably also to TBA. Oh, and though I’m short to say partnership as that seems barring to others who might want to help, I’d love working with you.

Are any of you going to be at IRI? Perhaps we could further discuss the logistics of this down there during lunch or something?

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

How about breaking it up into tasks? One person volunteers to co-ordinate photos of all of the teams from a regional. They delegate people (maybe including themself) to photograph each robot in the pits. Another set of delegates (probably with media passes) photographs all of the teams from the regional at field level. Repeat everywhere.

Make sure to take high-quality colour images when possible—but none of that film stuff, unless the photographer also volunteers to scan the images in a timely fashion.

Then upload the image files to a central repository. (Maybe The Blue Alliance, maybe FIRSTWiki, maybe even Wikimedia Commons. Either way, be sure to list author information, date and location, plus some information about the image. And photographers need to explicitly release their images under some licence—this saves so many headaches later on, e.g. if FIRST wants to use your photo in a brochure, they know how to credit you. I strongly recommend CC-BY-SA 3.0.)
