Code hosting for FIRST/Open source projects

Hi all, it's been a long time since I've been on here last but I saw the i.am FIRST special and it resparked my interest

First off, I was looking around the forums to see if there were any open source coding projects for FIRST I could help out with. Anyone know of any?

Secondly, what would you guys think of a dedicated hosting spot for FRC code? I've been playing around with Redmine for the past little while and it's great for tracking issues and everything and lets you include your code repositories. I know it wouldn't be useful for all teams but I think it could be a great spot to host code that other teams could check out and get help from. Any thoughts on this? I'm just thinking about it as of now and if it generates enough interest, I'd be willing to work on it.

Re: Code hosting for FIRST/Open source projects

Well I am working on a system to track time people spend at build and that kind of thing (its actually up on github right now). I am planning on doing a writeup on Chief Delphi about when it is a little easier for people to set up and it is more fully functional. It is in ruby (and rails). Lemme know if you're interested

Re: Code hosting for FIRST/Open source projects

WPI hosts FIRST Forge for open source FIRST related projects. That is where you can find the WPILib source, RobotPy, the Eclipse plugins, and more. If you create an account you can request a new project to be created.

Re: Code hosting for FIRST/Open source projects

I also like Google Code for open source project hosting. A project comes with a full wiki, source code version control, and issue tracking. It's been good enough for me. I'm currently getting our custom website CMS ready for posting. I have the project created, if you want to check it out (here)

Github, gitorious, Google Code. I've used all of these and have liked them. Personally github is my current version control system but Gitorious is pretty much the same.

I really like github as well. Too bad we can't have like a FIRST github or a FIRST group on github or something.

Re: Code hosting for FIRST/Open source projects

706 is working on Team Management Software. It would be nice to have some input from other teams. We aren't to a point where the product is usable and we would like to present something that works to generate some interest so the project doesn't die. Basically its a cms/portal for managing team meetings, build schedule's, documents, cad, code, and progress (todo, timeline). We have the document/code stuff working and also the todo. we most likely will be using other OS frameworks for the other parts. Its wrote in Jquery and PHP and some Java as a front end.

Oh cool, that thing that I mentioned that I'm working on is somewhat similar to that (no where near as full featured in planning, more just managing 1) meeting times 2) Time Entries (basically clocking in and out either via RFID or online for people that for do their work outside the build room) and 3) Managing "Work Report" type things

Re: Code hosting for FIRST/Open source projects

Well, if you can find a box to run it on (EC2/S3 boxes?) You could pull the code from Gitorious and run your own FIRSTorious if you wanted. Could get pricey though.

Well I do have a couple under-utilized VPSs at the moment but I'm not sure how heavy that app could get. I'll look into it though, thanks!

Re: Code hosting for FIRST/Open source projects

I had an idea a while back for a FIRST content distribution network that would distribute loads... maybe it could become a reality

ec2 is too expensive for the amount of power I need... But the free tier is PERFECT for Minecraft

I most likely will end up pushing the heavy lifting through Google's API framework.

@linuxboy send me an email corin (at) rypkema.org I think we can get something going
