USB Game controllers

I've been looking for a new USB game controller for my emulated games, and to control the robot.

Our team uses this: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/gaming...e-gamepad-f510 but I'm not sure if that's a good one.

Re: USB Game controllers

We've used a game pad for three years now I believe. Last two years we have used an Xbox controller and gosh, its pretty darn rugged. Even dropped it multiple times, spilt water on it and countless other thing.

We've been pretty happy with it and looking forward to using it next season again.

*I forget if you have to download the windows driver for it on the computer/classmate anymore?*

The Logitec controller is good if you can get it to work with your program. My team uses this driver for our robot.

For games and the like I have used Joy to Key."http://www-en.jtksoft.net/". All this software does is translate the buttons and joysticks into keystrokes and mouse movements. I wouldn't use it if you are trying anything fancy, but it works with all emulators that I have come across.

Re: USB Game controllers

X-Box 360 controllers work, but we have found that their sticks don't center exactly at zero (so you better put in a deadband so your robot doesn't drift when your fingers are off the sticks). We will likely be using the Logitech product going forward.

Jared,

We totally noticed that! Did you guys ever get the rumble feature to work (curious)?

Thanks,

No, we didn't - but we didn't try to either.

Re: USB Game controllers

If we want to use the Logitech gamepads, is there anything special we have to do or can we just plug them into the DS ?

Plug - n - Play,

But you have to remap what axis you are reading.

Re: USB Game controllers

We use the Logitech F310 religiously, now that the older Logitech Dual Action Gamepads seem to be discontinued.

With the F310s specifically, one thing you need to be VERY aware of is the little switch at the back labelled "X<->D"

It will switch the controller between F310 and Dual Action Emulation mode. When you toggle it, you will see the controller show up in the DS under different names depending on the setting of the switch.

The two controllers have different axis mapping, and if the switch gets flipped, your axes will get all flipped around.

Ironically, we usually keep one in X mode, and one in D mode so that we can clearly see in the DS which one is the Operator's controller, and which one is the Driver's controller.

In Java or C++,,,, How do you do the remappings ?

I'm not quite getting how to read the joysticks with the WPI libs.

EDIT: I found the following in another thread.

Use controller.getRawAxis(int axis)

The axis numbers are below:

Left Stick:
X - 1
Y - 2

Right Stick:
X - 3
Y - 4

Triggers(These are one axis. They are sitting at zero when neither trigger is pressed)
Axis 5
