Heh. I agree with your thoughts on the speed at which FRC is growing. Especially in Michigan...But, you and I do seem to be the minority. That being said...

I showed my mom the cast where they said hi to her, and then she went to Facebook and said, "My dearest son Andrew got a shout out to me on the NERDScast!". Ah, technologically impaired moms. You love 'em and you hate 'em.

Guest 19 has left the chat <Sunbun> a lot of LA veteran teams had to "settle" for central valley, i noticed <Baselthe2nd> Florida.. wasn't. <SuperNerd256> Yeah. There's a sausage place in Sacramento that sponsors teams. Guest 28 is logged into the chat <michaelblake> Money problems in Texas!!! <Chris_Nettles> Ha, my family owns a sausage plant. They donated some meat for a luncheon fundraiser. It made a bunch of money but it was quite a task to pull off dur <Meredith16> FIRST HQ is yowling at me because I didn't want to start more than the 6 teams I targeted for this year. We are trying to ESTABLISH teams <Chris_Nettles> ing build season. <SuperNerd256> ha <michaelblake> We won our regional (as a rookie); went to the CMP... and raising $$ here in Texas is a struggle... <SuperNerd256> *ha was like a laugh, not like saying ha ha <SuperNerd256> Going to champs helps Guest 24 has left the chat <SuperNerd256> You need people, too. Guest 31 is logged into the chat <Meredith16> Michael, that is correct. I tell them $15K minimun. <schreiaj> Michael, I would agree except for district areas <Sunbun> so should students immediately start fundraising for the second year before their rookie season starts? <SuperNerd256> Yes <Bryan33> 4th year is when all the origional students are gone. <schreiaj> students should be fundraising all the time <Sunbun> ^ Guest 32 is logged into the chat <thefro526> < always trying to get money for robotz <SuperNerd256> In fact, they're serious, they should start fundraising as soon as possible. Why watch EWCP? Leave now and fundraise! <Chris_Nettles> Schreiaj, can I quote you on that? <schreiaj> That students should always be fundraising? Chris where are you, I'll come and preach it to your students in person :P <andybaker45> agreed <Meredith16> But it is a lot easier to attract sponsors with a robot to show off... <michaelblake> Hi Meredith!! Hope all has been well... <Alpha_Beta_FRC1986> We had a different head coach each of our first 3 years. <Sunbun> a slip of paper that says "fundraise now" in big bold letters... should be a new addition to KOP <SuperNerd256> Students should be the ones fundraising, with the mentors encouraging it. Students don't learn anything if the mentors appear with money. <Meredith16> Hi Michael...going great...busy in Arkansas! <Chris_Nettles> Lake City, FL. The rookies just don't seem to get the concept of fundraising. <schreiaj> EWCP will donate that <Alpha_Beta_FRC1986> Most of the adults still help out in some way, but didn't want to take the lead 2 years in a row. <schreiaj> Little outside my driving range. <SuperNerd256> Sustainability cast: 10/16/11 <schreiaj> http://recordings.talkshoe.com/TC-98466/TS-548226.mp3 Guest 31 has left the chat Guest 33 is logged into the chat <andybaker45> what do you mean "Quantify the loss of a team?" <Baselthe2nd> Not to make an odd comparison, but 3rd world countries have much higher birth and death rates than industrialised countries. <Baselthe2nd> Maybe we need a better medical system <SuperNerd256> That's why we're making engineers. <Baselthe2nd> Montana has teams? Is this effect different in MI vs in SD <schreiaj> Andrew, SD has 0 teams <schreiaj> Alaska has 0 <michaelblake> From what I've seen in Texas... the fall-off in rookies is directly related falling-short on the funding... <Meredith16> SD has a 3 yr old FLL program and their OP, Head Ref and another key volunteer were killed in a plane crash this week. <SuperNerd256> After college I will create the first Alaskan team! NO ONE wants to struggle TWO years in a row <Baselthe2nd> Michael, I've heard some Texas FRCers have noted a lack of mentors. Have you had any problems with that? <thefro526> I believe 44 was the first Iowa team <thefro526> IIRC. <Guest 32> Yes 44 - 3928 could have restarted as 44 but wanted rookie funding <Meredith16> I had one FRC team lost in AR and they are doing FTC - they just weren't ready for FRC... Please remember that when planning your 2013 regional competition picks. <andybaker45> they were the 1st int'l team who won Champs - yes <andybaker45> 2006 <schreiaj> ty Andy <Sunbun> north dakota regional <Sunbun> >_< <Meredith16> Arkansas wants one....at University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. <Baselthe2nd> Well, of course <andybaker45> 188 is the grandfather CA team <Baselthe2nd> Canada has been strong <SuperNerd256> Grandfather CA team, eh? I'll have to go visit grandpa! <michaelblake> Meredith... we'll make it a priority to go to your first AR regional, hopefully, in 2013 !! <SuperNerd256> Oh, CA being Canada <SuperNerd256> Not California <Meredith16> That would be great...if we can just get FIRST to agree! <Baselthe2nd> Pretty sure one of the Montreal oganisers posted on Chief that only the awards would be in English <schreiaj> grandfather CA? Rich? <SuperNerd256> What are the specifications for a team to register for the championship? <Baselthe2nd> With a lot of regionals, it averages out <andybaker45> and most winning alliances only have 3 teams <Guest 17> FiM 18 slots & MAR 12 slots for championships <schreiaj> When planning though don't you have to assume worst case? <thefro526> G17 that is not confirmed. <SuperNerd256> 254 will win for sure. They haven't lost SVR to date. <Baselthe2nd> You can get a pretty good handle on the #. <andybaker45> because it always happens <Baselthe2nd> It's not a real possibility if it's that unlikely. <Meredith16> I expect Hall of Fame will cease to be an automatic soon... <SuperNerd256> Why do you say that Meredith? <Meredith16> Just a hunch..nothing more. and something has to give. <Baselthe2nd> Meredith, I hope that is not the case. <SuperNerd256> True... <Sunbun> what happens if they increase the cap for CMP <Guest 37> do you think 2 more teams will get in since 2 dropped out? <Meredith16> Team 16 certainly hopes it is not the case! And the travel coordinator, ME, surely does!!! <Meredith16> I wish they would do 8 divisions... <Baselthe2nd> I've love to get a 4th CA team or a 2nd EI team. <schreiaj> Id love to see another RAS <SuperNerd256> 16 should come to California again! But not to SVR. We'd like to not get blown out of the water by another team. <Baselthe2nd> How many teams preregistered for CMP this time last year? <pyeung45> Go 8 divisions <mwibbels> 8 divisions would be a hoot <andybaker45> unless the CHP can handle more teams <Baselthe2nd> Michigan only gets one. <schreiaj> one sec basel <Bryan33> I really believe that preregistering for the CMP will disappear in the next 5-7 years. <andybaker45> but, FiM and MAR get more plays for their $ <SuperNerd256> One does not simply preregister into Championships. <schreiaj> Basel, that's not in my data set <Baselthe2nd> @AndrewL hahahahahaha <apalrd> In FIM, they re-award the 9 point-based spots to the next highest teams <apalrd> the 9 award-based spots are not re-awarded <thefro526> aplard, nothing is certain <thefro526> and that's all I can say. <Baselthe2nd> Palardy, it's 18 teams, so if any team gets two spots for awards and winning, their extra spot goes to the 10th ranked team. <Meredith16> Point system for CMP? <Sunbun> east and west championships sounds plausible, at least until points <Baselthe2nd> 18 teams that were not preregistered qualify from MSC regardless of anything. <thefro526> Point System for the CMP makes me nervous Meredith <thefro526> I've seen HQ's point system <thefro526> it's not the best. <Meredith16> well... yeah.. <thefro526> IMO, for the moment, HoF should get auto qual <thefro526> RAS, EI, RCA/DCA should be auto qual <SuperNerd256> Maybe just regional -> states -> Champs <thefro526> along with 3/4 winners. <Baselthe2nd> I think that was me, actually.. Heheh <andybaker45> East - West Championships... then do a summit at IRI <Meredith16> IRI is the real CMP anyway <Bryan33> heh, IRI is the real championship. <SuperNerd256> lol <Sunbun> the all-star game? <Bryan33> Except 254 wasn't there. <SuperNerd256> Even better! <Sunbun> mm <schreiaj> Andy, we still on for EWCP summit at AndyMark before IRI? <Meredith16> 254 could have been <Baselthe2nd> 148 wasn't there either. <SuperNerd256> Yeah, but then you know the outcome would have been different <andybaker45> yes, we can have a EWCP summit during the week before IRI <Bryan33> I think they were going to go, but then decided not to. <SuperNerd256> I liked 148's '11 bot. Wish it was there <Guest 17> the reason FIRST going to push district systems to increase the # of levels before getting to the championship <SuperNerd256> I like their '09 bot best though andybaker45 has left the chat <Baselthe2nd> I had a couple design-gasms with 148's robot this year. <SuperNerd256> I disagree. It's FIRST robotics, not FIRST show up to a competition without a robot Guest 40 is logged into the chat <Baselthe2nd> Andrew, I can neither confirm nor deny. <Meredith16> A FIRST team without a robot is just sad. <schreiaj> Basel, it is a fact that it happened, I just dont recall the year <Baselthe2nd> I'm not doubting that at all, I mean on the year. <michaelblake> How do Rookie All Stars traditionally fare in performance at CMP? <Meredith16> Michael, with rare exception...not good <Bryan33> I think the rookie highest seed needs to go. <Baselthe2nd> 2337 as a RAS qualifier to the CMP in 2008 was pretty good.. <Bryan33> Also there is sooo many design awards. <SuperNerd256> How many Rookie all-stars are there, and how well on average do they do? <Meredith16> and 1625 and 3138...rare exceptions. <DrTheta> What about 3rd qualifying robots on winning regional alliances? <michaelblake> Well, not to be controversial... but, that's A LOT of slots that could be opened up... <Guest 37> that kind of happens with Deans List (where just the team members goes)...but of course its nothing compared to RAS <Meredith16> We are all about controversy and, Michael, it would open a lot of slots. Guest 41 is logged into the chat <rsisk101> Dean's list is an individual award, that's why it's not a similar situation, same as WFFA <Baselthe2nd> Like FTC with the captains-only qualifiers.. I don't think that's too popular. <Bryan33> thats what ive been thinking about. <Sunbun> RAS is pretty much JV chairman's, right? <SuperNerd256> Talk about it! <SuperNerd256> I like that subject <pyeung45> so would teams just be traveling out for 1 day to CMP if they aren't competing with robots? <thefro526> I can't say anything on it <Bryan33> I know Jim will talk alot about that if you bring it up tomarrow <thefro526> there would be a lot of F*** and S*** words <SuperNerd256> A lot of Funs and Science words? <schreiaj> Bryan, I know... <schreiaj> fun... sciency words <schreiaj> very technically correct Guest 42 is logged into the chat pyeung45 has left the chat pyeung45 is logged into the chat <SuperNerd256> I'm alright with 20+ matches! <thefro526> I'm done being mad. <thefro526> Got this under control. <pyeung45> 4 day regionals!!! <Baselthe2nd> Which.. the FiM system... does <Baselthe2nd> Ranks over several events.. <Bryan33> Like a district system does for the championship event. <Sunbun> having 10 matches is part of the strategy, no amount of matches would produce a ranking that everyone would be satisfied with Guest 43 is logged into the chat Guest 42 has left the chat <thefro526> gonna stop talking <SuperNerd256> Rank by individual robot performance based on what the robots do. For example, if your robot is defensive, base score on how good you are at defense. <DrTheta> Another issue is with an 8th seeded alliance winning, where the order of their second and third picks are essentially arbitrary <Baselthe2nd> NFL seems fine with 16 matches? <Guest 37> i just think it would make scouting A LOT easier.. <Meredith16> You can't get a team-specific ranking with random alliance partners doing who knows what. Maybe you don't score so the rookie can get experience, etc. <schreiaj> how many teams Basel? <Baselthe2nd> 32... <schreiaj> do they all play each other? <SuperNerd256> @ Merideth. I wouldn't go easy to let a rookie get experience. <schreiaj> < is not a NFL fan <Baselthe2nd> Not even close. <Baselthe2nd> Teams play 13 opponents a year <Sunbun> the only way to increase matches for a 3 day event is to get rid of some practice matches, start at 6am, or increase the duration of the event <schreiaj> So I would claim their ranking is BS. <SuperNerd256> I'd help a rookie all the way, but not preform under my capabilities. <schreiaj> Or run 4v4 <Bryan33> In some ways 2010's ranking system made sense. Minus the cooperatition. Chavin is logged into the chat <SuperNerd256> No 4v4 <SuperNerd256> Rank by individual robot performance based on what the robots do. For example, if your robot is defensive, base score on how good you are at defense. <thefro526> <sorry for being angry fro <Sunbun> 7 or 8's pretty bad, 10's okay, 12's good, but i feel any more than that'll result in diminishing ... something <Sunbun> returns Guest 44 is logged into the chat <Guest 37> well that brings up the problem of too many robots at CMP.. <Guest 38> 4v4 isn't happening this year <schreiaj> no it isnt <Baselthe2nd> I think venues would have issues with fitting 4 teams at one station <SuperNerd256> Nope. <Baselthe2nd> Just thinking of Kettering here <Guest 38> would be nice <Bryan33> Vex runs two fields and it works very well. The logistics of scaling up is what gets you. Guest 45 is logged into the chat <Chris_Nettles> VEX robot controller? I'll see you guys at FTC Worlds. <SuperNerd256> I want the game pieces to move by themselves so field reset can't get them Guest 39 has left the chat <apalrd> I would be quite happy with a FRC-ized version of the VEX Cortex. It's a really nice controller. <Sunbun> they could code the bot in brainf*** <thefro526> hahahaha <thefro526> sorry again guyd Alpha_Beta_FRC1986 has left the chat <thefro526> guys** <SuperNerd256> I'd like to see a separate event for those top tiered teams <Baselthe2nd> Something has to give. Hopefully FIRST figures something out? <thefro526> I didn't mean to go bats*** crazy I just hit on some points that mean a lot to me. <SuperNerd256> So that the other teams get a chance. <rsisk101> You are still on my christmas list Dustin <SuperNerd256> haha <thefro526> <3 you Sisk <thefro526> Not happy with HQ at the moment <thefro526> makes me kind of crazy <thefro526> (more than usual) <SuperNerd256> email Dean. Complain <SuperNerd256> JK. Don't. <thefro526> E-Mail those with power <Chris_Nettles> I'll e-mail Dean. <thefro526> Dean doesn't have much to do with the day to day ops, IIRC <Baselthe2nd> Hire Dave! He's magic! <Bryan33> Dean is actually pretty understanding to many of these points. Jim and FiM had a meeting a couple months ago about some of this stuff. <SuperNerd256> Ha. <SuperNerd256> I'd like to go to Dean's house, walk right up to his doorstep, look him in the eye, and say, "......YOU ARE MY HERO!!!!" <michaelblake> Isn't a good resource to supplement data is the "fantasy" regional rankings in CD... the wisdom of the "crowd"?! <Sunbun> except when people miss their draft time and the top three picks go to the rookies, but... <Baselthe2nd> Does just the recording end at 11 or the entire window? <schreiaj> dustin.benedict@ewcp <schreiaj> andrew.schreiber@ewcp <schreiaj> cast@ewcp.org <SuperNerd256> Can I join the cast and say "Hi Mom!!!" before it ends? <SuperNerd256> <SuperNerd256> Thanks! <SuperNerd256> No, it's fine. <SuperNerd256> I won't ruin the cast for everyone. <SuperNerd256> Perfect! tink1949 is logged into the chat <rsisk101> is his mom listening to the cast? Re: [EWCP] EWCPcast 12/11/11, Registration Cast Part II
The cast should now be in iTunes. I will post links and put it on the EWCP blog as soon as I get home.
On a personal note, I would like to thank Mark for joining us, his data provided some excellent talking points. Thank you for collecting and sharing this information! |

Re: [EWCP] EWCPcast 12/11/11, Registration Cast Part II
Nice job on the webcast guys. Just a minor correction regarding the regional that the two German teams are attending. They are registered for the Las Vegas Regional along with one Mexican team as well...
