Inventor Error. Cannot modify

Cannot modify the library file C:\Users\file name\Desktop\file name - INVENTOR\Long Frame.iam
Component C:\Users\file name\Desktop\file name - INVENTOR\Long Frame.iam is not checked out to you. Edits are not allowed on this file.

That pops up when i try to edit my file i downloaded. Any answers of how i can edit my file so i could remove and add my own wheels and other components?

Re: Inventor Error. Cannot modify

Sounds like a Vault related error. When you first create your project you'll need to choose between a single user project or Vault based. If you choose Vault it'll enforce file permissions designed to allow multiple users to collaborate. Might want to check there. You can also maybe just check the part out so you can edit it. There is a Vault tab with several options, including Check Out and Check In.

Thank you for replying but we are not using vault. We downloaded the parts files from AndyMark can we edit these files in inventor without having this error?

Re: Inventor Error. Cannot modify

I agree that it sounds like a Vault related error. Even if you are not using Vault the suggestion that the project file is set to use Vault can cause this error.

To check, do the following,

1. Open the assembly in Inventor.
2. On the Launch panel, click Projects.
3. In the lower half of the dialog box, check the entry at Type. It should be single user. If it shows Vault, then that is the problem.
4. To resolve, create a new project file uisng Single User. Refer to this video.

Thanks for replying! But i didn'nt work. I found the properties and it said single user. After opening the file it still said the same pop up. I looked into the file properties and its not a read only file. Any more suggestions would help me.

Thank you,
Kimo Josh

Re: Inventor Error. Cannot modify

One of your settings/ file paths is messed up. I would check all of your settings under the inventor symbol and then "options" as well as check your project, I know you already did, but that sounds like a an problem that comes from an unchecked "Project file" option. Also how far apart are your "andy mark" parts from your assemblies? depending on the path its taking/ where its saving etc weird things can happen especially since andy mark parts are downloaded as .step, and not in a native format.

Re: Inventor Error. Cannot modify

I don't remember how, but you can set up a multi-user project without using vault. at the top of the browser, click the arrow by model if you have the option of file status then select that. right click on the part and click resolve. then choose to steal checkout. if that doesn't work, try the same things in other projects. if all else fails, try a save copy as.

Thanks but i dont understand or cant find what you are trying to tell me. I have been able to copy and paste it into a new project that i create, but once i paste it into my new project all the blocked parts become all separated and arranged out of place. All my wheels and fame is all lined out not how it was assembled in the original file. Any recommendations of how to fix this?

Thank you,

Kimo-Josh

Re: Inventor Error. Cannot modify

Try a File>Save Copy as and then see if you can work from that file.
If that doesn't work - attach the file here or provide direct url link and I'll take a look.
