Rookie team: question for VEX

Hey Chiefdelphi,
here in los angeles a new VEX team has risen However, we need some advice.

1) for the kits, which kit do you recommend? we want to make a really good, maybe even possibly winning robot =) we're competing in the california state gateway championship

2) what language of code exactly should we know for VEX. c,c++, java? i'm also a bit confused, what is robotc and easyc? which do you recommend using?
