ONLY if they are fun to read. Otherwise it would be too boring if everyone submit their college Essay. Besides, the point of starting a contest is so you would take advantage of it and write something new

I like the idea of an open category, but how would that work? How can you compare essays when they are talking about different topics and each is good in their own way?
