Take the boxes and run!

As I'm sitting here (on a Sunday) putting together
the agenda & events for the NYC Remote Kickoff
Event and knowing that it's only 19 days away, ah!,
(thats because we start receiving the kits on Friday),

we were all wondering...

Is your team going to "Take the boxes and run!?"
Or you getting to participate in the workshops or
Brainstorming session?
(I think this applies to all Remote Kickoff sites)

We're gonna take them and run!

Well, with SCRRF we have plenty of workshops in the pre-season, which do rookie teams (and rookie team members) much good. But because you can only take 5 people to the remote-kickoff at JPL, even if the workshops would do you good, only a few people can experience them, and so the overall benefit for larger teams would be limited, and there's no room to take any rookie team members.

At the Poly kickoff we have made it mandatory that our student leads attend the workshops at the end. However, I believe one person from our team will take the kits and run to our build site(this still has to be confirmed)

come now! wheres your team spirit? staying and brainstorming would go well for preliminary ideas. more brains are better then less. stay and come up with some good ideas, or crackheaded far-from-plausable ideas just for fun. from what i hear, there will be a lego field, and also a real field (or maybe just a real field) at the poly kickoff so we can have some fun with strategizing with dollies and coaches!

We'll probably take 'em and run... the other teams might not like us taking their boxes though...

Run

Since the Kokomo Kickoff will not be having any workshops, all of the teams are going to be taking their boxes and running home.

We had our state-wide FIRST workshops for the Indiana teams in November, so (hopefully) the teams are ready to roll.

One piece of advice for everyone going to a remote kickoff:

Don't open up your kits until you get them in your car or to a different location. If all of the teams attending a kickoff opened their kits, then parts would get mixed up and teams would lose track of which motors, controllers, etc. were theirs.

Andy great piece of advice.... We will be having a brainstorming session at the Arizona Kick-off. Teams will have an opportunity to take kits and run or stay and brainstorm.

I think the teams that stay and brainstorm will have better ideas on how to attack the game because of the brainstorming with other teams.

More people = More ideas

And in a brainstorming session there are no bad ideas. All ideas are good, it's just some are feasible and some aren't.

One more piece of advice:

Bring a cart or a dolly so you don't have to carry the kits by hand. Too many FIRSTers broke their back because they forgot to bring one. Think of the poor volunteers (like me) at the remote kickoff who will be handing out kits.

After you open the kits, make sure you check with the list of inventory and see if anything is missing.

Our two teachers (one is returning after taking a break for a year) will be picking up our kit, and then running back to our kickoff.

Our kickoff is at RUHS Futures Academy. This is the first year we won't have seating for everyone cuz over 40 people are going to be there from our team alone.

Our rookie Woodbridge High School has 5 team members all going to JPL, and our teachers will be looking out for them. Doubt they'll need much looking after. Very determined, focused, and experienced as a team in science fairs. Irvine will probably be staying after at JPL.

Our rookie Santa Monica's reps will be looked after by our teachers too. Santa Monica will probably be running back to their continually growing team - mentors and students. They're doing great stuff preparing, planning, studying.

For us...being a "rookie" team we will prolly end up staying. But for the 4 students who will be going most of the time will be spent visiting our old team (384) and talking to them about thier season. We might attend the rookie team just to see wut its like. For me and another student tho...last years programming workshop did almost no good so that sorta makes me want to just get the boxes and go!
