FRC Slideshow: Every Robot 2012

With less than two weeks until the start of the 2012 FRC season, FRC Designs is presenting a challenge to all FRC Teams:

Make a commitment to take pictures of robots for the upcoming events in the 2012 FRC Season.

Last year, Bryan Culver (Team #33) presented this idea in this Chief Delphi thread (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=96341). For the upcoming year, Bryan connected with FRC Designs to enhance this project.

Three Requirements:

1: You must commit to an entire event. Feel free to share the workload over multiple people, just ensure that you get at least one picture of every robot. This ensures that all robot get photographed. Only full competition requirements will be accepted.

2: Follow the picture requirements. To ensure picture quality every robot must be photographed while in its pit facing the aisle without people working on it. The picture must be taken diagonally showing the front and left sides of the robot. Every picture must be clear, (1024X768 MAXIMUM), and clearly show the robot's number on both the front and left bumper. This is a lot less complicated than it sounds and most cameras can shoot much higher quality pictures then 800x600. (Example photo attached below).

3: Follow the submission requirements. When your photos are sent to me they must be a .jpg file extension. The picture must be called ####.jpg where #### is the team number. (ex: 33.jpg) If you are sending multiple photos of the same robot, label pictures after the first with lowercase letters starting with "b". (ex: 33b.jpg ; 33c.jpg etc) This allows me to organize all the files easily instead of personally going through over 1000 files organizing, renaming, and changing the file extension so they all match. Follow the FRC Design submission page to contact the website (http://www.frc-designs.com/html/Submit_Design.html).

Disclaimer: Photos will not be posted until World Championships

Re: [FRC-Designs.com] FRC Slideshow: Every Robot 2012

Just as a rule of thumb - ask each team about posting their robot's picture online before you take the picture. Not all teams (they have their reasons) appreciate it when pictures of their robots are online for all to see, even after ship day.

Just +$0.02

I understand why teams don't want their robot's picture posted online, but if your at a public event (especially if its webcasted like the majority of regionals are), I don't think you can be upset if someone takes your robots picture and posts it online. I believe events have signs that say by walking into the venue, you agree to letting FIRST use pictures of yourself. I think this should apply to your robot as well

I'm 98% sure I can handle Wisconsin and Boilermaker.

John, like I said, teams have their own reasons. I have come across teams that ask not to, so it should be a common courtesy to let the team know where their robot's pictures will be posted.

I'm not sure if this pertains to teams robots, but when a student signs up in STIMS they agree that pictures can be taken of them. Not sure if that's all it states but if you are at a public event you can take pictures and post them to the web.

Akash, although I quoted you, that wasn't directed at you. I am also aware that some teams don't like to have picture of their robot online for various reasons. Last year I was a little taken back when another team's robot showcase video had our robot in the background at a pre-ship scrimmage, so I understand the sentament. I just think its a little much to ask that no one takes a picture of your robot at a public event that is likely already webcasted. Just my opinion.

Also not directed at anyone, but i agree. This is a robotics competition, but its also a FIRST Organization. It should not be a big deal that a team's robot is put somewhere on the web. We are supposed to be faithful in the ideals of Gracious Professionalism, are we not?

Matt may need to correct me on this but as far as I am aware these pictures will not be available for viewing until at least after the World Championship. I fully understand any team's desire to keep there robot a secret for the competition season.

In any case, I attached another example picture because I thought that explaination was a little fuzzy. We're just looking for a diagionally taken picture with the team number clearly visable on the bumper without people working on it. Also, the picture needs tp be taken portrait style. (tall and skinny) Finally, I think Matt forgot to impose the MINIMUM picture size: (800x600).

Thanks guys
Regards, Bryan

If I may provide some insight here, I made a comment to Akash while we were chatting about this thread. 816 is planning to do a closed to the public build season this year (first in quite some time) as well as not posting Pictures of their robot until sometime after the MAR CMP. Some of the members are concerned with the copying of our machine and/or it's components from event to event - especially with the new District System this year. We learned First hand in 2011 that it is possible to rebuild more than 50% of a machine in under 6 hours with a proper game plan.

I guess we really don't have any control over what others do, though I would suggest that you hold off on posting any sort of photographic database until the week or two leading up to the CMP. At that point all of the secrets are, or at least should be, out.

A good idea would be to ask everyone in the pits about taking pictures of their robot before hand, and then have pit admin announce that the robots should be facing the aisles right before lunch break on Friday, and then go about taking pictures during Friday lunch break.

This is because I believe that Friday lunch break would probably have robots still in a great condition, and would not interfere with people performing miracles in the pits.

I did not mean to cause this much controversy. We are merely trying to create a database of robot photos. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

This is great! No rush, this thread will be open for commitments until build season concludes. (although, we would like to have all of the events taken care off well before that.)

When you're sure, simply post what event(s) you will be photographing and what name you would like to be credited under. (ex: real name, CD name, team name, etc)

Thanks guys
Regards, Bryan
