Kinect Programming
How do i go about programming the kinect-
>What language is it in >Will the robot have to use this language >can i be configured to java >how does it connect to a computer >etc... I just dont know where to start :/ |

Please take the time to read through the control system and kinect setup instructions and look at the kinect labview examples. They will explain a great deal about how it works.

Our team programs in Java and I was just looking over some of the new Kinect Classes and Methods. You have to install the netbeans plugins to get the api for these methods and to use them, you can download the plugins here :: FRC 2012 Netbeans Plugins. There is a Kinect Object that you can create which you can call ethods getPosition and getSkeleton. Which will allow you to get various points on the persons body. That a brief overview that I've come across so far. Also there is a Kinect SDK you can dowload as well here. I haven't looked into that because you need windows 7 to install it and I'm at my XP computer. AS far as other documentation you should be able to find some more on FIRST's website and possibly microsofts's as well, although the Java API for FRC has alot of information on it.

For me, it simply prompted that it had updates available for the FRC plugins, which I then ran. There is an additional Java plugin for command-based control that you might want to grab.
Note: Netbeans, w/ automatic updates setup |

I was just looking at the kinect sample programs and they dont seem to complicated for the autonomous. I cant seem to think of a way that i could use it to find the balls, targets if used on the robots.
Anyone know how to work with the kinect on the robot? |

Lots of people know what it would take to make the Kinect work on the robot. Only a very small handful of those people believe it could be worth the added effort and expense.
My advice: if you don't already have a good handle on what you would have to do in order to connect a Kinect, don't worry about it. Just focus on building a robot that works without one. |
