FIRST Robots: Behind the Design 2006

I know there's a few threads about 2006 robots. After the 2006 and 2007 season, books were published detailing the designs and design process of 30 of the award winning robots. The books averaged around 10 pages of information (text and lots of pictures) per team. Pictures are everything from hand sketches done the day of kickoff to detailed design and CAD, to prototypes, to the finished robot.

The 2006 book is called FIRST Robots: Aim High: Behind the Design by Vince Wilczynski and Stephanie Slezycki.

Here's the full list of teams: 16, 25, 33, 86, 100, 111, 121, 123, 141, 190, 191, 207, 225, 237, 293, 294, 322, 330, 357, 384, 418, 467, 494, 694, 1024, 1114, 1319, 1501, 1510, 1629.

Looking through my copy of the 2006 book, I got a lot of good ideas for shooters and control algorithms. I think it's a great resource for all teams this year. If you want to learn from the best, this is great way to do it, that is directly applicable to this year.

Unfortunately, the book is out of print, but there are still ways to get it.

Amazon currently has the book for under $12 (list price is $40), but only with very limited copies. Last year, the 2007 book was similar to last year's game, and sold out quickly, and prices skyrocketed (over $100). http://www.amazon.com/FIRST-Robots-H...5998740&sr=8-2

It may also be available at your Library. The Los Angeles County Public Library system has 4 copies of the 2007 book, but none of the 2006 book.

Re: FIRST Robots: Behind the Design 2006

Luckily I asked and received this for this past Christmas. I've been reading through it and it seems like while the storage methods will probably be different for this year's game, the shooting mechanisms from 2006 will likely be very similar to those in 2012.

Lucky for me I received the book for Christmas also! I have been reading through the whole thing for the past week now and I am extremely glad I am! I agree that storage will be completely different considering you can only hold 3 balls at once, but I anticipate many similar shooter designs to 2006.

Ah, excellent. I have a Safari Bookshelf account and the whole book is available for free if you have room in your bookshelf. Thanks!

FIRST Robots: Aim High: Behind the Design by Vince Wilczynski and Stephanie Slezycki.

My copy arrived today.

The mec drivetrain pictured prominently on the cover has the wheels mounted incorrectly :-)
