Games won on penalties

It seems to me that there are a lot of easy ways to incur 3 point penalties. How many of you think there are going to be many games won by the penalties scored rather than baskets scored?

Those are most likely going to be updated in the rule updates. I'd say within the first 2.

Foul's will probably be easily obtained from the defensive players in your court. So if you can run into defensive players while you are in your key then please do. That's a high hoop scored right there. So possibly you may see bots that just do that. Get points racked from the defensive bots that are delivering them.

I believe its very probable that games will be won and lost just from foul points. I do like the new system though.

Re: Games won on penalties

It says that strategies specifically designed to abuse RG44 will be a technical foul. So I doubt that we will see too many teams only designed to do that.

The first 2 weeks of regionals I have a feeling many qual matches will be decided by penalties because all robots will not be able to score baskets.

Similar to what happened in 2007.

Agreed; it will be interesting to see how the average scoring per match progresses through the weeks - more baskets will be made later, but more fouls will be committed earlier.

Re: Games won on penalties

All FIRST did was turn a negative into a positive. Now teams are awarded points if they are fouled instead of subtracted points if they foul. The only real change is the Real Time Scoring of these fouls, which I feel detracts from the valuable deliberation the Referees take at the end of the match. Also, now only Technical Fouls are able to be questioned. While this streamlines the process, it places a lot of points within the Ref's discretion.

Re: Games won on penalties

As is the case every year - matches will be won or lost due to fouls (formerly known as penalties) this year. There will even be teams eliminated on Saturday afternoon due to fouls.

Fouls are part of the game, and teams need to consider each of the fouls when developing a strategy for game play and robot design.

I don't think the fouls will be that bad...

They also removed the post match referee discussion of fouls that used to be a sanity check by having the points immedeatly awarded. The possibility of multiple calls of the same penalty happening concerns me. I want to know what the intent for preventing this will be.
