Single or Dual Speed Transmissions
Single or Dual Speed Transmissions ?
Does anyone have thoughts or insights regarding using a 2 speed super shifter for this years game. |

Re: Single or Dual Speed Transmissions
Shifting to a lower gear ratio would probably help during the balancing and the higher one to zip around the field while shooting. Probably not a s simple as that, but that is the only use I see this year and will stay away from it.

Re: Single or Dual Speed Transmissions
I know the main reason for me suggesting them to my team is for the benefit of the slow speed on the bridge, it could be a real help in balancing

Re: Single or Dual Speed Transmissions
The low gear ratio might help if you decide to cross the bump. Since hitting the bump at speed and using the momentum to carry you over might be rather disastrous for your wheels/frame, low gear could give you the torque to crawl over.

Re: Single or Dual Speed Transmissions
I see dual speed being an advantage this year. In 07 bots with ramps were almost useless with single speed partners. With the bridges and very little room to move(with multiple bots) a very slow low gear will probably be a huge advantage.

Re: Single or Dual Speed Transmissions
I think it might be a great year for the supershifter... since 10W 1" stroke solenoids are allowed, I was surprised AM hasn't made a solenoid shift kit...

Re: Single or Dual Speed Transmissions
In 2001, teams 60 and 254 had 2 major advantages with regards to the bridge vs everyone else, generally speaking at SVR that year.
6 wheel drive for stability and a multispeed transmission to quickly balance, using low gear. It was clearly an advantage, since 2001 was a timed game to win. I think using one this season has its merits. |

Re: Single or Dual Speed Transmissions
This year seems like a great one for Shifters.
And with AndyMark it is quite easy to get them. We are defininty heavily considering them, the only issue is being the high price. |

Re: Single or Dual Speed Transmissions
This is an awsome match from '01. Watch for 60 going over the barrier and 254 balancing(they were both 4WD).
Another good match. This was the alliances best match. I notice that the bridge that year stayed down while this years bridges stay balanced. That tells me that it will be harder to get on the bridge but easier to balance once on. Last edited by Marc S. : 09-01-2012 at 17:36. |

I must be getting old.
I was there and we were with them. *mixing up recall of memory* |

Re: Single or Dual Speed Transmissions
The way I see it, there will be people trying to knock you around no matter what game it is. You might even be blocked trying to get into the key. A low gear transmission can let you push through any blockers especially when you have high traction wheels. ALso it is good for balancing when you can push your teammates to the right balance.

Re: Single or Dual Speed Transmissions
The SuperShifters cost an arm and a leg compared to CIMples or ToughBoxes, but I feel low gear is going to be big this year. I know we will be using them, unless something else happens.

Re: Single or Dual Speed Transmissions
We were thinking of a "pseudo 2 speed gearbox". By that, I mean we'll be using a single speed CIMple box geared for high speed, but add a button to drastically decrease our speed. We don't think we'll need a lot of torque primarily from the gearbox itself, and we doubt we'll get into any (major) pushing matches, so we think the wheels we're using and the "low speed" button we have will solve those problems.

Re: Single or Dual Speed Transmissions
That's what we're doing. Just press and hold a button and the speed is run at a fraction of the high speed. We used it last year for precision movements, and to make wide turns easier. Loved it then, so we agreed to use it now.
