As everyone has said, it is by no means required. With that said, I have always used one and would not know what to do without it.
If you want a great investment, buy yourself a Maker's Notebook. These are *fantastic* books with tons of reference material in the back. Apart from an engineering journal, keep a binder with the manual and all the team updates. This is indispensable.
