Penalty impact on OPR

I was thinking about OPR tonight, and realized that the new penalty method might make OPR less accurate. Instead of being a measure of points scored, it now includes penalties scored by the other teams. My opinion is that other teams being penalized doesn't make you better. Thoughts?

Re: Penalty impact on OPR

Does it include penalties scored against the other alliance (points for you) or penalties made by your alliance (points for opponents)?

I think it should only include penalties that your robot makes.

That's not necessarily what he's pointing out/the question he's posing. OPR is based off points scored by your alliance. The fact that penalties, instead of being deducted from your alliance(thus giving your alliance a lower score), points are added to your opponent alliance(thus giving them a larger score). This means that OPR numbers might be less important this year due to that differential.

Ohhhh. That makes much more sense now.

In that case, I agree with OP.

Re: Penalty impact on OPR

Good point Dan. Anyone calculating or using OPR should pay attention to how teams attain points.

Re: Penalty impact on OPR

I've always kept penalty score separate from other points. Normally, I have excluded penalty from my calculations, and I'm pretty sure it makes for more accurate decisions on game outcome. Teams don't try to get penalties like they do score, but still, some teams might be more prone to penalties than others, so I'll have to check.
