This is the point I was trying to make that obviously went WAY over your head. On top of the fact that they have the combined mechanical skills of an ANT does not make things any better. I am easily annoyed, and things like this annoy me. Would you appreciate being put on a back burner in favor of a bunch of young, inexperienced, immature kids who really have nothing to do with what the applied for? By the way, the last thing, "open up", was uncalled for. Chill.
Let me give you a little background about myself:

2 years ago I was a newbie like the one you are referring to. I didnt know anything, I had limited mechanical skills. I joined because I thought it would be a cool thing to do.

Now in that first year, I wanted to learn. I went to every meeting (Which was a feat in itself since our build site was 40 minutes away.) I went to regionals. At regionals I helped scout for the team.

Well throughout that year, I wanted to learn all about mechanics. Due to the disorganized nature of our team, I mainly sat around and watched.

This brings me to last year. Last year I knew a little more and throughout the season I learned many many things. I attened all the competitions, and held a place on the drive team.

This year, I am the acting captain, and without me the team would be lost.

So. I started as a newbie, I cared, I learned, and now I am in charge. Can you show me one criteria I fit in your post just because I started as a "newbie"

Oh yeah and that went over M's head? Yeah right. I have never seen anything go over M's head. YOU?!?! tell M!?!?!? to think before giving a response? please take your own advice. It is clearly obvious that M does and always will understand more than you.

PLEASE dont bash people because they dont know things.(For that matter, dont bash them at all) Have you tried teaching them? If so, did they want to learn? Has it ever occurred to you that like me, they were never given a chance to learn?.

Since you can bash people for not knowing anything, Im glad that you came into FIRST as a freshman and knew everything. As for the rest of us, obviously we are better off. If you want everyone to know how ignorant you are, you have just shown us. That and the fact that you have a serious lack of respect
(/Me is astonished)

Im sorry that was so long, but I have very strong feelings about this topic.

My arrogance? If you'll excuse me, I'm simply "calling it as I see it", like you say. Why is my opinion wrong? Why are you attacking me? What did I say to offend you? It seems to me like you're the one worrying here, it's like what you say is right no matter what and nothing can change that. Perhaps I really am too shallow to understand this, but you obviously don't know me at all, not unlike anyone else in this forum except purplerose (my girlfriend). I am new to a school that has a robotics program. I came from a Northeast Philadelphia school that had, quite literally, a negative fiscal budget, letalone a Robotics program. I only moved out here in the middle of the school year last year and wanted to pursue the program because it would give me real life technical skills that I could apply in what I hope to be my future occupation. I am, frankly, ignorant of the values and whatnot that the program is supposed to teach, and because of this I see things as a young child sees the world; in black and white. What happened, to me, was wrong. To you, perhaps it was right, but in my opinion, that's not what matters. As you say you are, I am incredibly stubborn (and confrontational, but being a newbie here, I am trying my best to keep my flames under control).

Cory....Cory, Cory, Cory....my friend, you fail to understand my point of view. I see where you're coming from, and I'm sorry that I offended you, however, I know things that you don't. Not to say I'm more experienced; you're completely correct in that, and it's quite likely that I never will be. However, the newbies I am referring to do NOT, as generalization, have any inclination to learn about what they've applied for. I know a few veterans on the team and the idea they've given me is that which I explained. I also know one of the newbies, and she is of that attitude; she told me herself. I did not intend to put across the feeling that I know everything; I know I don't, that's one of the reasons I want to be on this program. I have quite a few other things to say here, but it's 1:40 AM, and I need sleep.

My apologies to anyone I offended, but please, take a look from my perspective. I didn't mean to bash anyone here, so don't bash me.

heeheehee...funnyness and easygoing-ness is awesome in a guy always.....
the worst pick-up line that i ever used (yes, i do try to pick up guys (all the time!)) was there was this guy who was really hot and i had idolized him for a while. One day i got on the school bus and he was riding it so i sat next to him and said, "You wanna know something funny? I used to be obsessed with you...You're really hot!"
yeah....i got a date out of it but nothing else (except a hug...)
And that was when i had my head shaved anyway so it kind of went with the look

I have other bad pickup line stories but we won't delve into those right now....they're mostly just me being incredibly blunt.

Thumbs down Calm and Collected

Ok you three, take a time out. Nothing that you are talking about has anything to do with the topic at hand. The thread was revived for pick up lines. Perhaps each of you should take the time and use your energy to look up the threads which are titled "Why did you join First?" I believe there was even a QotW regarding this topic. But just in case you don't feel like looking it up, here's a hint: Not everyone joined FIRST because they want to be an engineer, I sure as anything don't I just wanted to play with Legos and got sucked into the greatness of the program. MarkF, let me offer you some advice, of course you can totally ignore me if you like, everyone has a different feeling about the program. it means something different to everyone. For some people the magnitude of what can and is done does not hit until they go to their first competition, I have seen it happen. As a mentor last year I had the opportunity to sit back and watch the students who worked and the ones who didn't, trust me the adults see who does the work and who doesn't. Your efforts will not go unnoticed, that also means that your attitude is also going to be noted. If other people have to expend too much energy defending themselves to you they don't have the ability to devote the proper attention to the project. Perhaps if you try to work with those people who aren't there for what you consider the right reasons, you will learn that you may be a better teacher or you will make a more positive impact on the adults who are watching.
M, you have been around in FIRST for awhile, you know that it is your job to mentor, not egg on such conversations. Help Mark understand and see more than just one side of things. It's not the best idea to be stubborn in every situation. You said it yourself, open up. That doesn't mean just listening to what other people say and understanding that they have their opinions too, but don't word your posts as if they are from a dictator's speach. You are very open minded about certain things, in order to be true to that it has to be about everything, not just what you chose to be open about. Mentor, guide, water the flowers but do not over feed.
Cory, it is ok to have strong feelings about things but don't forget that sometimes you have to contain them. It is ok to share but to an extent, don't jump on a person, it only makes things worse. If you feel yourself getting too hyped up finish typing what you feel needs to be said and then delete it and start over. It can be a bad idea to post when emotions are high. A good rule of thumb is if a thread becomes centered around a select few posters stop posting. It ill quickly go off topic. Don't forget that you can consult posters who have been around awhile before you hit that button that says submit. I have asked people to read something before I post it in order to see how it is taken by another person. Things don't come out the way they are supposed to sometimes.
At this point the only thing I ask is that you have read this and do not post a reply in the thread. Show the rest of the posters and readers that you have taken the time to read and are doing something rather than just saying something about the way this thread went. At least give me that courtesy. I'm sorry to sound so condescending, but lets face it; sometimes we don't know what we are capable of unless we are told. Sometimes that hurts but a little sting is better than a big rejection. With that I vote to lock this thread.

I almost did lock it. I'm hoping this off-topic 'debate' takes another form (ie: chat or email).

Definately, a woman these days can't bother herself with getting dinner ready- nevermind keeping the house clean. Any guy who is willing to cook for me is in

actually...

i've never been given a pick up line, per se, but I was "Miss Daisy" for our team at Drexel last year, and so was our robot... people were holding up signs saying Miss Daisy is HOT. I'm still not sure if they meant me or the robot...
Carolyn, thank you for being the voice of reason... and just so your guys know, we've lost most of our freshmen anyways (does anyone else have this problem?).

Heya, this is her b/f.....no, she isn't the tall blond. She's the short brunette, lol! Kirsten is the girl you saw, though. Purpledaisy is one of her friends.

Thanks Brandon, it's good to be back.
The worst pick up lines I've ever gotten both came from the same person. "You know cars, play sports, and read Sports Illustrated, you're like... God's gift to men. Are you like available or something?" The other one was "Combat boots with a skirt, I've never met anyone who could pull that off before. Can you take me shopping with you?" I thought I was about to gag...
