Bumpers: Metal Edging To Retain Cloth Needed ?

Historically we used to put 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/8 L along the bottom edge and top edge of our bumpers, screwed into the back with the L onto the top and bottom to help "lock" the cloth in place. Recently we just did the top. Now we would like to not bother at all (good overlapped seam stapling with an air stapler).

Just looking for a little reassurance that other teams are quite successfully using bumpers without any special mechanical cloth "clamping" system like our L aluminum edging ?

We've always only stapled it, no problems...

Same here. As long as it has been wrapped with plenty of material onto the back and stapled well, never been a problem. The only time I see issues is when the fabric is cut too small and the staples are too close to the edge of the fabric, then the fabric tends to pull out.

^^^ Same as those guys above me. As long as there's plenty of material to staple to and as long as you staple it enough times along the bumper you should be fine.

It works perfectly fine without angle, if you have strong fabric and staple it well.

But the angle is free weight, and hence free traction. Why not use it, if the extra thickness doesn't impinge on any dimensional limit?

Re: Bumpers: Metal Edging To Retain Cloth Needed ?

The angle also can help create a good surface if you are using velco to attach a bumper cover for the other color.
