Which motor to use for the vaccum? (ball gripper)

Our robot is almost done but we are having a trouble deciding on which motor and material to use for the ball gripper. (You know the spinning vaccum like design? I don't know the name )
So far we tried window motor with zip tie strings (i opposed on the window motor) and fisherprice without gearbox with the surgical tubing (purely because of there was no suitable gearbox). fisherprice was just a fail and window motor was way too slow. Plastic gearbox provided for fisherprice is just way too big and ahh... any ideas?

Re: Which motor to use for the vaccum? (ball gripper)

You need to use a smaller motor, rs 550 or fp and just attach a gearbox to it to get a pretty reasonable reduction. The 550 style motors are the 2nd most powerful motors in the kit, all you need to do is reduce the speed a little.

banebot with gearbox was my initial thought but there was no enough space inside the robot. Alsp banebot gearbox is nowhere to be found... -__-
let's see where this goes

Re: Which motor to use for the vaccum? (ball gripper)

We are using an RS550 into a custom built tranny made from gears from the FP tranny. It has a two stage reduction of approx. 15:1. The roller is made of a bunch of pneumatic tubing strings passed through the shaft and secured by tie wraps. It works works really nicely!

The attached picture is of our prototype. We found that one stage of reduction wasn't enough. It only has about a 5:1 reduction. So, the final version has two stages.

Re: Which motor to use for the vaccum? (ball gripper)

We used the 2012 FP motor and the first gear out of the 2006-2009(?) FP gearbox, with a custom shaft made in a lathe by turning 3/8" aluminum hex bar round on the ends to fit into 3/8" ID bearings. We were aiming for about one second ball travel from the floor to the top of the robot, and the chain reduction slows it down enough so that it does that.

The gearbox was made using a drill press and a 7/8" Forstner drill bit.

And now everyone knows where we stole, er, em, we found the inspiration to build our own transmission.

Re: Which motor to use for the vaccum? (ball gripper)

We are using 2 window motors for the 1 belt that will convey it upwards.
To get the ball in it, we drive over the ball and the pressure between a board and the belt begin the lift.

Re: Which motor to use for the vaccum? (ball gripper)

This is the first year that we are seriously using the 500 series motors. A FP for the intake. We two conveyors to hold 2 balls each driven by 550. The turret rotated by window motor. Feeder rollers for the shooter driven by 550. Shooter wheel spun by rs775v18.

Back to the subject of this thread for the intake roller. We are planning to use the kop Fisher Price motor on a BaneBot 60 4:1 tran. Using the shaft as a pulley with cold shrink. A vacuum cleaner belt to an Al tube with cold shrink. Overall ratio 7.1;1.

After seeing what some on this thread have done with the fp plastic gear boxes, I plan to experiment with them in the future. Thanks

I have a feeling these will be fairly common this year as it is, I regret not having a picture of ours, but be warned, it is significantly more powerful than the two already posted.

I am sorry for the late reply but will you post the pictures of gearbox from different angles? we finally decided to go with custom gearbox and i just wanted to be sure before the fabrication.

Re: Which motor to use for the vaccum? (ball gripper)

We are using a FP 0673 on the planetary gear that AM sells then a 10t - 36t reduction, sounds big I know, but we've mounted it within our robot. We couldn't be happier with the amount of speed and torque it gives.

Check out our 'car wash'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja4uZ0Fxe-M

We use drawer liner material, at a BB RS775-18 w/ 4:1 xmission and 21:11 sprocket reduction.
