Bumper Rules

Hi all -

I noticed when watching the Israel Regional that a few robots had their front bumper numbers split by their intake. I thought this was against the rules. The team that we are mentoring has made this mistake - but if it is allowable it will save them the time of repainting. Anyone heard anything about this?

Split numbers aren't supposed to be allowed. There have been several Q&As that specifically say this. At Kansas City we made at least 2 teams fix this very problem before passing them.

Re: Bumper Rules

At the Smoky Mountains Regional I had to tell several teams that split numbers would not be allowed.
They fixed them with no arguments.

Re: Bumper Rules

D,
Split numbers are specifically not legal per the GDC through the Q&A. Without being on site, there are a variety of reasons why you have observed this issue.
The reason for this ruling lies with the way fouls are handled in this year's game. You don't want the wrong team to be assessed a foul so the refs need to be absolutely sure which robot they are calling.

Re: Bumper Rules

For future reference, if teams have a split bumper, for let's say, entering balls into the robot's mechanism, how and where would the team number be printed?

For the regular bumpers that span the whole side of the robot, you'd spread the numbers across the singal bumper, but what about 2 pieces of bumper on one side? :-/

You put it on one side of the split or the other - your choice. This has been addressed by multiple Q&As; have you been keeping up-to-date?

Re: Bumper Rules

The bumper rules are rigid and strict according to the manual, yet the final decision (of what a "inspection passed robot") is [illegally] defined by the head inspector. A huge load of bumpers at Kettering had numbering that had lower than 3/4" stroke at all points, and instances of split numbers were very present. Some head inspectors need to be updated on this issue because there is inconsistency within this inspection process.

Re: Bumper Rules

Al,

I was under the impression that they weren't tracking who got the foul, just that there was a foul. I've heard time and time again that you can't challenge specific fouls because there is no way to tell which team committed them, just which alliance. Is my understanding wrong?

You are correct, technical fouls and cards are tracked to the team. Ordinary fouls are entered on the touchpads and not tracked by robot.

Can the bumper's be different heights from the floor? We would like to have our rear bumpers about 2 inches higher than rest of the bumpers.

Yes, that is perfectly legal given all bumpers are in the bumper zone.
