Re: [FRC-Designs.com] FRC Slideshow: Every Robot 2012

There was discussion about creating a flyer that could be printed off and given to teams at each regional, so they understood what the pictures were to be used for. Has that been developed yet? Also, a single sheet that describes the specs and requirements for each picture, would be useful as well.

Thanks!

I havent read through the entire thread but any plans on where to post up the pictures for collection purposes..

I might recommend creating an Access database or even a general Excel based database for quick search and so we can do a quick dump also.
Thanks, right now the plan is to have a photo dump on frc-designs.com sometime in the near future.

I personally have not developed anything and I'm not sure if Matt had anything going. However, I think that its a great idea so if anyone wants to make something, we would be willing to distribute it to everyone perticipating. As to specs and requirements I was planning on PMing everyone their respective week as a reminder so I can just attach a (smaller) list of requirements.

Re: [FRC-Designs.com] FRC Slideshow: Every Robot 2012

As competitions have started, and I am sure many people have started taking pictures (both for this showcase and for personal reasons), I figured now would be the best time to share this piece of information.

For resizing pictures, here is an extremely easy to do method.
  1. Download PhotoResize from this link http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pictureresizer.html
  2. Change the file name from 'PhotoResize400' to 'PhotoResize1024'. What this does is tell the program to make the pictures largest dimension be equal to 1024 pixels (the max that is requested for this project).
  3. Drag the photos on top of the icon for PhotoResize1024. This is much like adding files to a folder.
  4. Because this runs in a command prompt, you may have to click 'Run' in a security window for this to work. I have been using this for robotics and personal photos for quite some time now (3+years) and have had no issues with security issues.
  5. Now you should see the command window open up and start running. The only thing you have to do now is wait. The command prompt will tell you to press any key to close, once the program has finished running.
  6. This will create new files in the folder the original pictures were located. They will be listed as xxxx-1024, where xxxx is the original file name. (Ex. 123.jpg will appear as 123-1024.jpg)

I just ran this to verify the steps, and I think I covered everything. I did a picture from my Senior Design Project that was originally 5,788KB in size and 5184x3456 pixels. Once completed (took about 2 seconds), the new file is only 44KB in size and 1024x682 pixels.

Just remember to go back and get rid of the '-1024' from the file name to keep consistent with the naming structure that is requested.

Hope this helps, and please let me know if you have any questions/concerns.

Tested on Windows 7, Vista, and XP.
I don't own a Mac, so I have no clue if this works with one or not. Bootcamp should get it done though.

Re: [FRC-Designs.com] FRC Slideshow: Every Robot 2012

If you want a link that doesn't automatically start downloading a .exe:

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pictureresizer.html

Edit: Looking at the developer's site (http://www.rw-designer.com/picture-resize), there are tons of commands that can be performed. Poking around, there's one for overwriting original files. Instead of using 'PhotoResize1024', use 'PhotoResize1024I', and the file names will stay the same. It'd also be a good idea to create a backup before doing it that way unless you absolutely don't want a copy of the larger files.

For everyone comming into week 2, their is still no one photographing the Greater Toronto East Regional and the Oregon Regional

If you are attending one of these events, please help out!

Thanks, Bryan

Re: [FRC-Designs.com] FRC Slideshow: Every Robot 2012

I noted the posts on picture re-sizing with some interest. I use a free program called Irfanview for batch resizing as one of its many useful functions. In short, anyone on a windows-based computer who has any interest in digital photos at all, can make good use of this program. Ultra capable, I suggest that after a week of use you will be thinking of sending this guy a buck or two at least. I do know that if 10% of the people now using it had all sent him only $1, he would be quite wealthy.

Re: [FRC-Designs.com] FRC Slideshow: Every Robot 2012

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to go over a couple of the quick guidelines to taking pictures.

1. Please set your camera settings before the event to 1024x768. This is a fairly standard size that most cameras should have. If the pictures are to big they are very difficult to transfer in bulk, and if they are too small then they won't show as much detail.

2. Please take all the robot pictures in Portrait this is very important! It is nearly impossible to resize pictures from landscape to portrait without distorting the image.

3. As a guideline for how to take the picture you want to be able to see the front of the robot and the team # on both the front and side bumpers. Basically, you should be taking a diagonal pic of the robot. Also, please ensure that the pictures don't have people working on the robot. Most of the time they are blocking parts of the robot from view. I also highly suggest taking more than one picture of each robot and so you can later delete the extras keeping the best one.

4. Once you get the pictures downloaded, if you rename the files according to the team #, sorting becomes much, much easier. (Ex: 0001, 0011, 0111, 1114)

5. If you co-signed up to photograph a regional with someone else, you guys can decide how you want to share the load, there is no "best" way or anything like that.

We have found that https://www.wetransfer.com/ is great for transfering large amounts of pictures.
Thanks, Bryan

If you don't want to reset your camera "merely" to take these pictures, take whatever resolution above 1024x768 you like and forward your "monsters" to me via the wetransfer mentioned. I will endeavor to resize them for Bryan's use and send them to him on your behalf. PM for the requisite e-mail address.

I will be taking some pictures at Hartford, but I'll be busy, I suspect, and so will likely miss more than a few. I will not be trying to "downgrade" my images on a case by case basis. I expect to process whichever of them I submit to conform to Bryan's specification.
