Question Applying Material to individual Faces

Can someone tell me how to apply a material to only individual faces or a selected group of faces? I'm assuming that this should be a pretty easy task, but I can't figure it out. I think you need to do something with UVW mapping, but I'm not sure. I think I've tried it all. Someone please help me out.

Put a UVW map on the object and choose faces on the modify panel.

Yeh, I've tried that already....didn't work. Can you do it either way whether you convert it to editable mesh or editable poly, or does it only work on one?

Cool

Select the object and do an edit mesh on it. Then go in and individually select each face you want then right click on them and go to properties. Now change the map channel id here to 2 or something. Now you can have the texture only apply itself to map channel id 2 faces.

Oh! now I understand what your asking. The guy above me is right. You can also chose faces with an edit mesh modifier and change the material spinner at the bottom of the modify panel in order to use multi/sub-object material where the number next to each material corresponds with the material number you set in the modify panel.
