Latest word is a DSL line WAS put in to accommodate a webcast... things are still being worked out. If so, we'll have Moanalua to thank.

I was watching some Hawaii practice matches today. Is it just me, or is the poly-carb on the bridges missing the "array of 15 small holes, details of which are included in the official field drawings."? (2.2.5 of the game manual)

Worry not, the holes are all there are they're supposed to be

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

A big mahalo to another successful regional event at our 5th annual Hawaii FRC tournament!

Despite lag issues that many teams experienced, it didnt defray from the exciting eliminations that happened today.

Thank you to team 2439 and rookie team 4218 for allowing us to be part of such a great working alliance. We truly had an alliance that relied on teamwork: 1 Shooter, 1 Feeder/Defender, and 1 Balancer. We were not heavily convinced it would work at the beginning, however, trusting each of our strengths, we did quite well.

This had to be one of the best finals for me personally as we didnt have the usual 359-368 alliance, and I cannot recall ever playing against them in our 13 year history (doing soooo many regionals with them).

One of the best joys I got to see was 4218 getting selected last, and their pure joy, tears, and gracefulness in experiencing a regional championship. Not only were they awesome at helping us win, it left a permanent positive experience where I know they will be successful for years to come.
Our other teammate was 2439, and for years they always got so close in both VEX and FRC. To finally see them get above that hurdle and get to experience championships, is even more gratifying than winning ourselves.

Congrats to Team 3008 on another RCA and to Team 3880 on their EI award!

And last but not least, great job to teams 368 and 1056. They both had outstanding robots, evident by their qualification records. 1056 is the best fender bot/dunker I have seen this year, hands down, while 368 will be a force at the Fresno regional during week 6.

Get your popcorn ready!

Thanks Glenn, 17/17 perfect 10's in hybrid and only one missed shot the entire tournament, if you call our dunk's a shot??? Too bad we can't show it and our lifting robot bridge dropper at worlds but thats how FIRST goes I guess. It was definitely the most interesting alliance selection I've seen in 10 years! Congrats to you and Baldwin and.....sorry, forgot your third partner....I'm really happy for Baldwin!!! First trip to worlds....very very deserved!! You've had so many finalist over the last rwo years. Best of luck to you both at Worlds!!

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

Congratulations to all on a highly exciting Hawaii Regional. Thanks go out to our partners Punahou 2090 and WHEA 3881.

Baldwin 2439 - congratulations on going all the way. Great job, Jun. You deserve the trip to St. Louis in this, your senior year.

Waialua 359 - we did it without you in 2009 and now you've done it without us in 2012. Can't say we didn't give it our best shot. Yoshi's gonna be a monster when he's a senior in 3 years with 2 for 2 under his belt already.

Island Pacific 4218 - you are just a gem to behold and a rookie inspiration, indeed! We all knew before the matches began that you would be going to the Championship one way or another. No matter how successful you are in the future, you will never have another year quite like this one so enjoy it to its fullest!

Despite the highly competitive elimination matches, I must say Match 61 will be one of the most memorable with Punahou 2090 (our eventual first pick), Kapolei 2445, and ourselves all scoring 12 points in hybrid, having Punahou up on the Coopertition Bridge with Baldwin, and then our last second shot from the key.

We will try to get match video up onto YouTube as soon as we can, but we failed to capture about 1/3 of the Friday matches. Not sure if we'll be able to get it up before we depart next weekend for the Central Valley Regional.

Again, congratulations to all and thanks also to teams that helped with volunteers for the event. Without them, this all would not be possible.

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

On behalf of the entire Hawaii robotics community, I would like to thank Alan and Carol (sp?) Anderson (Team 45 the TechnoKats) for volunteering at our event. I was correct in believing that I couldn't handle being the lead Control System Advisor at my team's first competition. I was greatly relieved when Alan volunteered to take the lead leaving me to be the back-up. Carol did a great job on the green shirt safety team.

All day Thursday and Friday morning, Alan didn't have much down time. He was always moving from one team to another keeping things moving and solving problems much more quickly than I could have. A number of times I encountered problems that I knew that I couldn't handle quickly. I called Alan for help. It is humbling to find out that things that you "know" are dead wrong. Without Alan's help, there are a number of teams that couldn't have competed or would have competed with "crippled" bots.

Again Thank You both, enjoy the remainder of your time in Hawaii, and I look forward to seeing you at IRI,
Randy Wood

Thank you Cool Geeks for the Webcast.
The elimination rounds are at:
http://www.justin.tv/coolgeeks_frc2348/b/312749058
The matches start at about 0:4:00.
The final match is at about 2:29:00

Over turned robots are part of the game design, we ended up on our back during our last match on Friday. But to have two down during the 3rd game of the final match was insane.

Baldwin 2439 - Thank you for selecting us for selecting us. You build a strong alliance.

Island Pacific 4218 - Thank you for playing your role to perfection. It has been a pleasure working with you all school year. For those that don't know, IPA started both VEX and FRC teams this year. That is a daunting task. And thanks for the 775 motor. It launched every one of our shots.

Kalani 3008: Congratulations on back-to-back Chairman's Awards. In just your 4th year in FRC, you are setting a high bar for other teams.

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

Thank you to everyone who made the Hawaii Regional possible, and amazing.

I would like to especially thank 1056 Waiakea High School the "Hot Rocks" for choosing us as there first pick during alliance selection. Your autonomous, robot , and bridge tipper was amazing. 2443 was quite surprised you guys chose us as your partner. Sorry for the hesitation during alliance selection; I was taking the news as a surprise, and I was stressing/trying to figure who I was gonna choose as a partner if no one asked us. We were seeded 9th, but moved up as the 8th seed once Baldwin chose Waialua.
Also I would like to thank team 3882 Lahainaluna High School for being a good alliance partner. As an alliance we made it all the way to the semifinals falling just short from moving on to the finals. It was so intense pushing it to a rubber match.

Congratulations to the winning alliance of Baldwin, Waialua, and Island Pacific Academy.

Good job Jun and Baldwin Robotics. You guys will represent Maui well at St. Louis. Congrats for being the second Maui team to earn the right to go to Worlds. Enjoy yourself at Vex and FRC worlds!!!

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

Wow! What a great regional! OK, we didn't have any triple balances, but there sure were some awesome scoring robots...359, 368, 1056 and 3008. Semifinal 2 and the finals were the most exciting series of matches that I can recall.

Baldwin showed how to win as a great passer, defender and bridge balancer.

Great job by our Kapolei neighbor IPA too.

Congratulations and good luck to all of you in St. Louis!

You were a good pick 2443, plus we were suffering from "Maui withdrawals" when Baldwin chose Waialua and we weren't their partner for the first time in three years. I wish I had listened/heard your drivers suggestion about sending Lahainaluna (another partner from last years alliance) over the bridge in the first match, you guys played great "D" in that second and third match. I'm sure we make it to finals if I had listened to you, that darn ball isn't under the bridge or McKinley doesn't shoot lights out in that third match (I still want an explanation for that from Alan) but we'd need miracles to knock off Baldwin/Waialua! That is going to bug me for years now! I don't know what it is but Waiakea loves the Maui teams. Probably because you guys are always very good and right there with us. For your seniors its best of luck and to your underclassmen we'll see you next year at VEX and other tournaments. You're going to love Worlds Baldwin. Don't forget to visit all the vendors ASAP to get shirts, frisbees, LED toys and more before they run out. Rotate your media pass so everyone gets a chance to walk the robot into the dome, its an unreal feeling. Shoots, now I'm wishing we were going with you guys! Tell your teachers to lotus notes me if they have any questions. Get your microbot teams going so we can go to Japan together! We're doing another bipedal workshop this summer on the Big Island, hopefully some of you can come to it. We're working on an 8 servo model that can be "walked" by a smart phone. We're getting closer to the Hominid bipedal i want to build and do tournaments with. Can you imagine soccer or sumo with bipedals at the high school level? Hopefully before I retire I can see it happen.
