I have a feeling that at least part of this decision was based on the fact that IFI has discontinued the 883 controller. Also, the 883 and 884 have a different minimum output voltage, which means if you were to build your robot using an 883 controller, and then have to switch to the 884 as a replacement down the road, your machine's operation could be very different. While it may be somewhat costly, I have a feeling it's just a way to make things easier all around...
