A way PA requests can get a good laugh from people is if other teams join in. At Wisconsin this year, we asked for permission to buzz the tower, which got the other part of the line from another team.
I think most teams understand this, and when everybody gets in on it, it only makes things more fun and less stressful. I completely agree that inspection time is off-limits, but those moments after a good PA request when the pits burst out with laughter are absolutely priceless.

"Whoever borrowed team 418's 10-stone anvil, they need it back." (Stone is a traditional English unit of weight sometimes used for anvils. 10 stone is about 140 pounds.)

Re: Funny things to ask for on the PA system

At the Seattle Regional this year, a team asked for a Companion Cube on the PA. There was a lot of giggling in our pit due to the large amount of Portal fans.

Note that "Crescent Wrench" has multiple official and colloquial meanings. In US vernacular, "crescent wrench" is actually a generic trademark for adjustable spanner, originating from the Crescent(R) brand of hand tools. However, the brand was not limited to adjustable wrenches, and thus metric Crescent(R) wrenches do exist. In some places a further colloquialism has developed for "crescent" as simply any open-ended wrench. (This seems to be considered incorrect more often that the proprietary eponym version though, I believe). Regardless, industry does make adjustable metric spanners, and the Crescent(R) brand is attached to some metric wrenches. However, I don't think Crescent(R) ever made adjustable metric wrenches (no "metric Crescent crescent wrenches").
yeah, i saw people commenting on that earlier in the thread. the ambiguity of the term kind of ruined the joke, especially when the guy showed up trying to help us out. a true show of GP on his part

Re: Funny things to ask for on the PA system

At South Florida Regional we put out a post many teams thought was a joke that was actually real. "If anyone has contact solution, please bring it to team 348, no really, like for eyes, on humans. Once again that's human eye contact solution, team 348." We actually had a member mess up their contacts and they were in dire need, thankfully a team helped us out with that one.

Re: Funny things to ask for on the PA system

True (but long) story.
I'm a Neurosurgeon. Towards the end of most lumbar surgeries, I ask the Anesthesiologist to perform a "Valsalva maneuver". This involves closing certain valves on the breathing loop and squeezing the oxygen bag; similar to you taking in a big breath, then trying to exhale with your mouth and nose closed and turning your face red. Since this is a common maneuver, I usually just say loudly, "I need a Valsalva," while looking at the incision through the microscope.
The great part is when we have a new nurse in the room; I will then look at him/her and repeat, "I need a Valsalva." The nurse assumes I am asking for an instrument, but of course there is no such instrument and she/he panics not knowing what or where the instrument is. After a few seconds, we all laugh, and tell the new nurse he/she is now initiated into the Neuro team.

Once again, FIRST prepares students for life in the real world.

Re: Funny things to ask for on the PA system

At South Florida regional on Friday our batteries in our label maker had died. I simply went to pit admin to request an announcement that 1251 needed two double A batteries. The annoucer upon making the annoucement says "1251 would like a flux capacitor and two double A batteries." I didn't even ask for a flux capacitor, besides we already have one in South Florida.

Re: Funny things to ask for on the PA system

At Championships last year, we asked Pit Admin for a metric crescent wrench. For those of you who don't get it, a crescent wrench is the same thing as an ajustable wrench, so they can't be metric or otherwise. Pit Admin fell for it though

This reminds me of my uncle who is a retired Air Force captain. He told me once when he was a aircraft mechanic, they'd tell the new guy to bring back 50 feet of flight line for the next morning.

"Team 1676 needs a 4 inch square of 1/8" unobtanium, and an aluminum magnet."

Yeah, it's OK if they're not busy, but they don't need any grief when they are.
