Music at the Regionals

So after going to 3 different regionals this year i noticed that the music isn't very well precoordinated, and some songs were repeated a lot. It's not bad, but i'd like to help get it set up to something better. Also i wanted to suggest a couple songs. I was wondering if anyone knew if first has a preset playlist for all the regionals or each individual regional or if there was any way to contact an individual regional about that.

Thanks, and go teams for St. Louis!

Re: Music at the Regionals

as far as i know FIRST provides DJ's with a "suggested" playlist, after that it depends on the DJ's preference so long as its family friendly. Im not 100% sure how FRC finds DJ's or their sound crew. my guess is it depends on the coordinators of said regional.

you can always suggest to the DJ/ sound crew a few tracks you would like to hear, ive made requests in the past and theyve actually been played

Re: Music at the Regionals

The best music I've heard so far was at Montreal (no Cotton Eyed Joe, Chicken Dance or Macerena. THANK GOD!). Lots of good jams. The worst was DC where I think the DJ played a total of 50 songs all weekend and repeated several songs as many as five times.

Re: Music at the Regionals

Annually, I find that the best DJ is Nick at the Waterloo Regional. He does a great job picking from all kinds of music genres and playing music appropriate to situations happening on the field.

In terms of how FIRST finds the DJs, to the best of my knowledge at regionals Show Ready Events hires them for each event. I am not sure if they have DJs that travel with the rest of the crew or not.
In Michigan or MAR, the DJs are either hired professional DJs or (way more often) they are volunteers like everyone else as there is no production company at the district events.

Though annoying songs..I completely agree... they seem to get the most participation from the students (and volunteer staff/judges!)

Well, didn't hear much "Locomotion" by Little Eva or Grand Funk Railroad in 2011. Has anyone heard "Sweet Georgia Brown", the Harlem Globetrotters theme ANYTIME in 2012?

*Failing to avoid thread*

Apart from my loathing for songs which elicit coordinated -time wasting- mass dance offs:
I realized that Rick Astley is still making his way into play-lists at events.

This was a funny prank 4 years ago, let it die.

Re: Music at the Regionals

I heard The Saturdays' "Up" on a webcast and it was also played during one of our matches at Seattle.

It was either the same DJ or there is a playlist provided to the DJs by someone because that is a pretty obscure song for a US audience. I don't believe that any of The Saturdays' records have been released in the US.

Re: Music at the Regionals

One of the things that impressed me at my first Regional a few years ago was how much fun the kids were having. FIRST was obviously attempting to make the venue fun and cool ..even though it was a stereotypical "nerd" event.

I'm all for whatever gets the kids up and into the "spirit section". As long as it's not country music..please not country music.

Well, the Harlem Globetrotters DID make a quite lengthy appearance at Peachtree...

But I guess that doesn't count, since I only heard it play while they were playing/performing.

Such songs are typically used to pass the time while something else is using the clock. Far from wasting time, they provide a way to keep people occupied during field repairs, timeouts, robot cool-down delays, etc.

I do believe it was played in the finals at Northville. HOT, do you know?
