In my opinion i think 5 will be around the winning number. Higher than that and the stacks will get much easier to knock down. Also you can make multiple 5 high stacks. The scroing difference between 5 and the optimal amount isn't that high.

in a perfect world you would have as many bins stacked as you have lying on the floor, because that would multiply to the highest number

if you have 24 bins, and 12 are stacked, you get 144 points,
if 4 are stacked, you get 80 points,
if 15 are stacked, you get 135,
etc., etc.

realisticly, between 4 and 8 should be more than enough

Only if one of your robots is on the top of the ramp, or you keep one of your opponents from being on the top of the ramp.

Several members of our team came to the same conclussion. But, others tried to point out that the object (not the object of FIRST, the object of competing at a regional or nationals) is not to win every match, but to make it to the finals. If you have a score of 44 every time, you most likely won't rack up enough qualifying points to make it to the finals.

Of course, there's the chance of beeing picked--but I've always felt safer building a robot with the goal of us doing the picking, than purposely designing it to have us crossing our fingers and hoping we get picked.

The problem we have seen with all 45 of the boxes in our zone is that it would be difficult to get all of the boxes in the middle and/or the others team's boxes. And even if you have every box on you carpet, your maximum score with stacks of one is 44, and if you do not get at least one of your robots to the top of the ramp, you could easily lose if both of the other teams robots are on the top of the hill at the end. Also, even if you have all of the boxes, and the other team does not score at all, you face the problem of the total points you team gets for competition, which would only be 44. So i am asking, realistically, what would reasonable tack height for success, including winning points to move on.

I'd say the minimum stack height for success is 2, only because I don't think every match will require stacking to be successful - while in other matches it will be extremely important. I'm more concerned about a realistic maximum #. Out CDI tourney a few years ago involved stacking boxes - it was amazing to see how insistent people get in knocking down stacks! And the rationale for knocking them down seemed less to do with scoring and more to do with human nature. "If you build it, someone will find pleasure in knocking it down!"
