Re: Newton 2012!

With all the long bots in this division, who can hang and how far? Who has a stinger (used in competition)? Finally who has tripled and how many times?

548: Long Robot
Space on Bridge: ~19.5" with bumpers
Stinger: No
Tripled/#? Yes, 7 times

Team 1111 is also a long bot that can hang off the end of the bridge to make room for a triple. Our CG is back-biased so with the middle of our center wheel at the edge of the bridge we are balanced. We also have a brake mode.

1111: Long robot
Space on bridge: 24" with bumpers
Stinger: No
Tripled: In our shop, but not yet at competition since we only had 1 regional

Re: Newton 2012!

639: Wide Robot
Space on Bridge: 24" with bumpers
Stinger: No. But we do have a special balance feature: Super treads. I invite anyone in Newton to come by and feel up our treads, or to a pushing match with any other robot. They are incredibly sticky on both carpet and the bridge.
We have two balance strategies that take advantage of this outlined below:
  1. Have both our partners get onto the bridge from either side that is convenient
  2. Cross over into barrier into alley so we can be protected from defense (not that we couldn't barrel straight through it if we needed to, but better safe than sorry)
  3. Once we reach the end of the bridge, and begin pushing the other two up, we tell them to drive against us so they don't fall off the other edge. We can push the other two robots up the bridge no sweat, and in low gear we have the granularity we need to get the balance.
Option two, we played around with at DC with a stinger enabled team, 1218:
  1. Be first one on the bridge.
  2. Allow middle robot on
  3. Allow stinger robot on to push up the bridge. The combination of low gear and the sticky treads make our robot unable to slip or slide off the bridge like so many others, so we make an ideal endcap.
Tripled: Yes, once, as alliance captain. We would have done it many more times but robot failure not on our part precluded it.

Re: Newton 2012!

Team 842:
  • Long Robot
  • Have brakes and treadpads to increase traction on the bridge when hanging off.
  • Can hang off a pretty good amount don't know how much room we leave.
  • Have a stinger to help with triple balance further if needed. Must be deployed opposite of traditional way due to robot height.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEy596leBjA
  • Have not done triple balance in actual match but have done it multiple times while practicing with teams 610 and 4183. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NDBS...mR6bPWnqCezto=

You didn't even bother to edit the giggles off the sound track of that video. Good to see the pressure isn't getting to you guys. Nor is it getting to your stinger deployment according to that video.

45 has tripled 3 times in competition and quite a few times in practice. We are a wide base.

Re: Newton 2012!

As long as teams are posting videos and pictures about their robots and new features. Here's something we started working on in January and just finally added to our robot. We had to lighten up a few other components to make weight for our “stinger” but it is functional and works well. You can also see that we can cantilever quite a bit of our robot off the edge of the bridge. In the video our 2004 robot is attempting to push our dead off-season robot up the bridge. Then our practice robot finishes the job and deploys the balance assist mechanism. We designed around the possibility of a triple balance and hope to get the chance to use our it at Championship.

Re: Newton 2012!

Buzz 17 is also a long bot but looking to triple!

Capable and ready. We were able to triple balance twice on the practice field in CT with three long robots, courtesy of our partners 126 Gael Force and 869 Power Cord.

NEU CT Regional PF Triple Balance #1

NEU CT Regional PF Triple Balance #2

We weren't able to pull it off on the real field due to varying complications, but we're ready to give it a go. Our robot has an offset CG so that we may hang more than half of the robot off the edge.

Photos to be added soon.

Nice job with the "stinger" 340! I look forward to seeing it in action!

With this stinger you guys will do very well maybe well see a triple from you guys. I wish you guys had it on during FLR or Buckeye to see it. You guys are going to do well in Newton!

Re: Newton 2012!

2468 Team Appreciate Bot

Long Bot with six AndyMark pnuematic wheels for drive but can balance with only four wheels on the bridge due to CG being located closer to end opposite of the stinger add on. We have put tripled balanced on the practice field but not on the competition field. Link to picture. The middle robot (456) was a mecanum robot turned sideways.

We have since added a stinger to our robot as well. Link to Youtube Video with two of our old robots. Our driver, Claude was pushing bot of these robots up with the robot. The middle robot is a mecanum drive base.

We take up about 24" on the bridge to balance with the use of the stinger for a triple balance.

We can tip the bridge to us or away from us on one and away from with the other end.

Can cross the barrier or the bridge to move from end of the field to the other.

Balanced on the Coopertition Bridge in Dallas West seven matches.

Good luck to all next week.

Let the fun begin.

Will we see any strategies revealed at Championships that have not been shown yet?

Re: Newton 2012!

Similar to what I did in previous years, I ran through 200 simulated qualification match schedules (with 9 matches per team, using the FIRST match generator).

I used each team's highest adjusted opr at any event to choose that team's "best event". Then, for that event, I used their unadjusted OPR for their contribution to a match. I also used the hybrid OPR, bridge OPR, teleop OPR to help calculate the standings. For the co-op bridge, I summed the co-op OPR for all 6 robots in the match and compared that to a threshold. When back-testing against regionals, if the threshold was chosen to be close to the number of actual co-ops at the regional, it had a relatively high correlation to the actual results on the co-op bridge. Almost all regionals had a correlation co-efficient of between 0.6 and 0.85. However, at the Michigan State Championship, the correlation coefficient was only 0.3. I believe this is because almost all of the robots there were able to balance so the balances that didn't happen weren't be cause of the robots, but because of luck. I used this method for calculating the co-ops, trying to get a co-op percent of around 60% (higher then most regionals, but lower then MSC). Overall, this isn't a very good way to do it, as it punishes teams at early regionals and regionals where teams did not co-op that much. However, it's included to help simulate the randomness of the rankings this year. All OPR data is from Ed Law's spreadsheet.

I calculated the results for each of the 200 simulated qualification schedules, and then looked at some statistics from the aggregate results.

Since the standings are much more complicated this year, and the co-op bridge is so important, and there isn't a very good way to simulate it, I looked at both the ranks, the number of qualification points, and the number of wins.

Everyone should attend Karthik's presentation at the championships where he covers "Why 'OPR' is a flawed indicator in Rebound Rumble".

The following were the values that were used in the simulation
Code:
