Chassis Guidance and Terminology

Today after school, my fellow teammates were quizzing me on parts of our 2011 OCCRA robot's chassis. Since I am a rookie and have never gone through a build season, I didn't know the answer to a lot of the questions they asked me. I'm not too worried about being illiterate for OCCRA, but since I want to help assemble the chassis for our robot in FRC, I feel that I need to learn some terminology. Can anyone help?
Cheers,

I'm sorry, but due to a web filter in effect on my computer (OpenDNS), dl.dropbox.com is blocked so I can't see the link you gave me.

Re: Chassis Guidance and Terminology

Over on 2168s site we have posted a presentation that we gave a CTFIRST University last year about building competitive drivetrains. It may be a good start for you. Its under the Mechanical Resources section. This by no means covers everything, research on this site through the white papers and various topics will also help you.

Re: Chassis Guidance and Terminology

To be honest you shouldnt worry. You will learn over the offseason what some terminology is. It will come pretty naturally

Re: Chassis Guidance and Terminology

First off, I saw that my team's (FIRST Team 846) powerpoint on robot subsystems was listed up above under the google doc link, and I'm really happy that you guys all find our presentation useful. However, I noticed that the slides in that presentation detailing the physics behind four and six wheel drives (center drop and no center drop) were not present there.

To jwallace15, you may find the information below useful in understanding the physics behind a six wheel drivetrain.

FIRST Team 846 Resources Page: http://lynbrookrobotics.com/?act=wrrf

This page covers the various talks we have done at the annual Western Robotics Region Forum Workshops. The full Introduction to Robot Subsystems powerpoint is there (including the drivetrain physics bit), as well as some interesting presentations on control systems, DC motors, and other useful things.

We're currently working on uploading more updated information to our new website, so please stay tuned for even more useful content!
