Re: Tips for first-year programmers

Over the years we've used a number of different controllers. And every year, I have the programming team sit down with the drivers to work out how they want to control the robot. We test drive with xbox and joysticks, and even one year a steering wheel.

We tend to always end up with joysticks for tank driving, and an xbox controller for co-pilot operations. The single xbox controller gives us a lot of flexibility with regards to buttons, and just ease of use for the co-pilot.

My top, number 1 suggestion for you: Reprogram last year's robot this fall. Start from scratch, and don't reuse any code from last year. Once you can get it up and running again with all of your own code, you'll know you're ready to tackle the new robot on day 1 of the build season.
I tried the former with mu son. He came back some days later with "Dad, what will rm -rf /* do?"

Re: Tips for first-year programmers

I am the only programmer at my school, my knowledge is very basic, i seem to be having problems with setting up the drive system on usb1 and on usb2 set the arm, we are using the joysticks from the kofp and when i change the usb 1 from the drive for the motors to usb 2 the same happens for the arm, based on what i saw do i need to make different joystick refnums, one for joystick 1 and the other for joystick 2 thanks in advance

Yes. Each device needs its own OPEN block and its own Refnum.

Re: Tips for first-year programmers

Is anyone else besides me having trouble with FRCMastery? I can see the selections but when I click on anything in the VIDEOS box nothing happens.
