Black Jag is now Obsolete Part at Digi-Key

Just got this email from Digi-Key today:

Quote:
Digi-Key Information Services
Obsolete Parts Notification

You have purchased the following part number(s) from Digi-Key within the last two years. The manufacturer has announced this part(s) will become obsolete. Please click on the link below for more information on possible substitutes.

Manufacturer Details
TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Description: MOD BRUSHED DC MOTOR CTLR W/CAN
Manufacturer Part Number: MDL-BDC24
Digi-Key Part Number: 296-25445-ND

For substitutes, please click here
The Jag has also disappeared from AndyMark. It seems that unless FIRST announces a new controller, CAN controllers will be in short supply this year. Yes, we saw the Request for Proposal earlier this year, but I'd hoped that we'd know of a replacement before Jaguars became unavailable.

So does anyone know where we could buy these? Or is this a sign that they will be phased out for the 2013 season?

Re: Black Jag is now Obsolete Part at Digi-Key

I don't suppose there's any chance of a new Jaguar being released from a new producer after TI bowed out? IIRC TI gave the designs to FIRST.

Either way, it looks like the Victor 888 and the Talon will be the reigning motor controllers this year.

Speaking of which, are there really any differences to speak of between the two? Did the 888 step up the refresh speed to put it on par with the Jag/Talon or is it still the same 17ms?

Re: Black Jag is now Obsolete Part at Digi-Key

I'm disappointed that the Jaguar has reached it's product EOL. (End of Life)

I was really starting to dive deep into CAN and exploiting more of the closed loop control functions in the Jaguar.
Nothing like asynchronous, distributed, and cooperative multiprocessing.

I'll just have to wait for the CAN version of the Talon speed controller.
I'm sure it's CAN implementation would be solid considering they make the 2CAN.

I'm sure that there is no shortage of Jaguars out there. Many teams have received them in the KOP for some time. As well, many teams have bought them from Digi-Key, etc. I know my team has at least 15 of them.

Re: Black Jag is now Obsolete Part at Digi-Key

I'm sure we've got a few in stock ourselves.
I know I've got one or two laying around in my personal stock for my fun & games.
If needed we could cannibalize an older machine if we really needed them.
But let's wait and see what this years challenge is and what the need/use might be.

Re: Black Jag is now Obsolete Part at Digi-Key

Just in time for CAN terminators to be available.

No matter light production is in progress for LinuxBoy's terminators for CAN

It looks like CrossTheRoad is working towards a CAN Talon and surely when the community speed control project gets rolling that'll support CAN (I have prototypes that already have it so worst case I'll push it along).

So CAN will luckily outlive the Jaguars.

Unless I am misinformed it seems unlikely that this question will be answered before Kickoff when the documentation is unsealed or the KOP is opened.

At that point the Talons, assuming they are approved, could be purchased or if they were provided to FIRST late this year would be in the KOP.

I don't personally know the status of that so I can't comment on anything expect the process FIRST explained to me.

I can't comment on the approval process for the CAN terminators either cause it's part of the process.

A general note:

At one point months ago Digikey had access to several hundred Jaguars. Apparently demand for them has been steady and extremely few remain in Digikey's stock.

Re: Black Jag is now Obsolete Part at Digi-Key

This post is pure conjecture on my part and in no way based in fact or personal knowledge.

I would be willing to bet that there is enough supply left that there will be jag's in this years KOP as well as enough available for purchase. I would conjecture that FIRST has pulled the entire stock into one selling location to more closely be able to control the stock left.

I would also be willing to bet that there will be a Victor 888 in this kit and I hope the tallon becomes legal.

We have put into our budget this year enough money to purchase a supply of either Victors, Tallons or whatever new controller is available. We will not be purchasing any more jag's.
