Exclamation 3dcafe legal?

are we allowed to use files from 3dcafe? i think we're writing to autodesk, but if anybody already knows that would be great.

We used stuff from 3-D Cafe in our animation last year and we had no problems. Why would they have issues with it?

it's legal...but i don't think that's what the competition is about. you should model everything yourself if you're gonna enter it in the competition.

Unhappy 3dcafe

i think that the main problem would be that we weren't the ones who created the files. i don't know.

.....

yeah, i understand the reason why we wouldn't be able to do it (morally if not legally), but it's not like we would be taking every single thing from there, it would just be a few minor files.

DONT...haha, yeah, I'm one for "Hey, let's build it ourselves!". I use this philosphoy for many reasons, morally and practicallity wise. Morally, if you feel your team should win because you stole some copyrighted work off of a free online site, stuck it into an animation, and now say you made it...then go right on ahead. Sorry for that rant , but anywayz...moving onto practicallity. Ive found often times when trying to animate anything from someone else (Yes, I've used 3d cafe before despite my previous comments, I've taken their files and played with them while I was really getting my feet wet in max...) you can end up with serious problems. Right up until a critical point (Usually around Feb. 20, 9pm or so), you'll realize that the way some of the components of the object were created, it won't correctly animate. This is especially true of IK animating. This year, me and my team will keep objects not made by us to a minimum. The only possible parts I plan on possibly not making myself are the VKOP parts, as they are much more precise than my models will be. However, I have to emphasize this further, BE CAREFUL when using parts made in other 3d suites. Many times the files are misread and u end up with vertices in the wrong place, faces on backwards, etc. It can be a real mess. Regardless if its legal or not, I'd say just don't.

- I love that little guy

the previous post was excellent. Animation off of others people's models suck. There is a great chance that their heirrchy willbe messed up and then you're srewed when you realize that you don't have a working model.
