is there an easy way to convert .ipt files to .dxf

DXF files are 2D, rather than the 3D .ipt files. As such, you cannot simply export the part; you need to export a single face. As such, Inventor allows you to right-click on any face within a part representation and select "Export Face As". Choose dxf, and export.

Alternatively, you could do the intermediate step of first creating an idw drawing of the ipt part, then export the idw a a dxf.

Alternatively, you can create a Drawing (.dwg) of a single profile, then you will be able to save as .dxf from the .dwg: file>save as menu.
