Re: Robot in 3 Days : Completed Robot Video

Agree about the significance of the effort. Candid commentary is also inspirational. Not all 72 hours are on record, but enough to be quite comprehensive. Now how do we get car chases, explosions, pies-in-faces, and "that's what she said" spliced in so teens will watch? gangnam style? call me maybe? sandstorm?

No, really, guys, stellar work. Thanks.

Re: Robot in 3 Days : Completed Robot Video

Nice work guys.

Could the team post the total "man hours" that went into this effort and the relative years of experience of those contributors?
For those of you not sure what I am getting at, working 5 hours/day for two weeks straight will still not hit 72 hours.

My guess on it is on the order of 300-600 mentor level (persons with 4+ years of experience) hours.

Agreed. This robot would likely be a top 8 seed at most regionals, given decent drivers (and with 5.5 weeks to practice, they'd be ACES).

Now, the question is: How many robots will we see at competition that are nearly RI3D clones or borrow large design components like that shooter?

It looked like they had lots of help from the live feed, but this is the core team and their rookie years. They were all students on FRC teams:

Dan - 2001
Andrew - 2000
Robby - 2003
miketwalker - 2002

They said in the chat, I believe, that they worked until about midnight each night and started at 9 a.m. on Sunday and Monday. So, that's about 42 hours and over 30 years of FRC experience.

Re: Robot in 3 Days : Completed Robot Video

I'm finding the humor that about this time every year someone has posted a "We have finished our robot" photo on chiefdelphi by now... and its usually a previous year's robot, some pile of parts, or something covered by a sheet, a black censor box, or a burred image.

This year those have been silenced.
One more way Robot in 3 Days has helped the community!

How much does the completed robot weigh?
Do you have weights of individual components? (ie: shooter, indexer, etc)

I think a lot, though I don't know how many will be intentional. A low hang, high shooter, human loading robot is a solid strategy that many teams I'm sure are considering on their own though the specifics of how will vary. I know I'd rather see 5 or 10 clones of this design than robots that can't score because their indexer jams and the lifter isn't strong enough.

Awesome job guys, this is an impressive bot even if it took a normal build season.

Thanks for all the kind words. The man hours were significant and we do have a few years of experience under our belt. It also helps to have most commonly available products already sitting on your shelves. ( Thanks Sponsors! ) One potential take away is that most teams pull late nights at the end of the build season. Why not flip the paradigm on it's head and have those late nights upfront.

George is spot on with our years in FIRST.

One thing I'd like to add is that we severely underestimated the time it would take to shoot and edit video. Mike and Andrew spent much of the first two days working on releasing videos and the live stream. It was painful to lose the extra hands but we had additional help show up at the right times.

On the weight: I think we are in the 85-95 lbs range. We took a weight prior to mounting the lifting mechanism and we were around 72 lbs. We have a few advantages like a lighter control system but we also didn't do anything to lighten the robot. We don't have weights on the individual systems/components. I imagine they could be estimated from CAD though.

George good to see you here. Those were great years when we were all together on1902. I miss being with the teams.

I think IR3 are that good with the 30 years of FRC made it possible to do a robot in 3 days.

Are you going to be at UCF regional, let me know when you are in the area.

The sad truth of posting a nice quantity of good-quality video for projects like this is that you almost need to bring on a dedicated videographer.

I enjoyed following your rapid build process, thanks for posting ^.^
