compression: wheel vs wall

Has your team experimented with having a compressible wheel vs wall? What did you find? In theory it shouldn't effect contact length.

Re: compression: wheel vs wall

Our prototype allows for adjustment of both. We have had the most success with allowing for maximum wheel compression. We have the 8" AndyMark Pneumatic wheels with less air than maximum and can now throw a frisbee 50 feet consistently.

We will be experimenting with the tire pressure variable tommorrow.

Re: compression: wheel vs wall

My team set up a shooter on 80/20 rails so we could adjust compression, then we used H beams from Mcmaster as thr walls. On one side we had 2 cims that had the 6 inch super grip wheels from andymark. On the other side was another H beam that had a strip of Poly Urethane Belting from mcmaster. We have it so the wheels make enough contact on the Frisbee so once it touches the wheels it remains on at least one till it exits. Then its compressed up to the wall with urethane belting. We were able to shoot about 60 feet. Its a little much but we'd rather shoot further then shorter If you have any questions or wanna see a picture just shoot me a message.

I was speaking with a mentor from another team. they had done extensive testing with wheel types. They found that a soft pneumatic tire, partially deflated, achieved the best "grab" on the Frisbee. He described the performance as" when the disk goes through the pinch-point, the tire wraps around the edge; compresses to conform to the Frisbee shape.
