Question Jaguar Ramping Help

The drive train is almost done for our robot and I am thinking ahead. We are using four Jaguars to control four mecanum drive wheels. What I want to know is how we can ramp up and down the Jaguar motors.

I have been reading in the forums and I keep hearing about encoders. What ARE encoders? Are they controllers built into the Jaguars? Are they built into the motors? I wouldn't even know how to figure out if we had encoders!

Can someone explain how I would go about ramping the motors?

Thanks!

Misha,

I think it would be more helpful in the long run to teach you to fish, rather than just giving you a fish.

1) Go to the andymark.com website and type the word "encoder" into the search box. Scroll down the page until you see the word "encoder" listed and click the link for that part, and follow the links on that page

2) type this into the Google search box and then read the links:

site:chiefdelphi.com "encoder"

3) type this into the Google search box and then read the links:

site:wpi.edu FRC "encoder"

4) type this into the Google search box and then read the links:

site:USFIRST.org FRC "encoder"

5) type this into the Google search box and then read the links:

site:screenstepslive.com FRC "encoder"

After doing a little research, come back and ask questions. You'll get a lot of help here if you do a little research first.

Re: Jaguar Ramping Help

Thanks for the info! Should've done a bit more research before posting. Now I know that we do not have encoders in out gearboxes. Is there any other way to ramp the jaguars? The only way I could think of would be to create a program to control the Jaguar voltage, but that would be inefficient and slow.

The Jaguars have a built-in voltage ramping mode, but it may not be what you want. You need to explain what you are trying to achieve and why. Then we can help you.

Here is some info:
