Climbing

My team and I were throwing around ideas for climbing to get the frist level 10 points
And we're wonder if you even have to be hanging off the first bar to get 10 points.
Because picture for the prymind in the rules shows level 0= ground level 1= off grounf to top of bar. So we're wondering if it counts to just use one of the downward bars and drive up enough to not have any of the robot touching the ground.

Re: Climbing

As long as you're not touching the ground you're at least in Zone 1. It doesn't matter what else you're not touching.

That said, "just" driving up the side of the pole is by no means a simple endeavor. I think almost any design that uses the horizontal bar would be simpler at the 10 point level.

Re: Climbing

I have read the rules and i can not find anything reguarding this topic. Like i know how you can climb the pyramid and how it has to be sequential and only one level at a time but nothing on helping another robot

Re: Climbing

It has been discussed here on CD...search is your friend :-)

For official answers, remember that the Game Manual and Q&A are your only sources.

Can anyone respond to this?
1. As long as the robot you are assisting does not invalidate the climb in some way (eg not touching the bars on the way up/touching more than 2 at once/ touching 2 non sequential), this should be valid. Q97 and Q107 in the official Q&A address this.
2. I'm not entirely sure what you are asking about here, could you try to be a little bit more specific about what you mean by "climbing together"?
3. This is legal only if one (or both) of the robots is (are) touching the pyramid this is per G33

For your last question, there is nothing that requires you must be supported by each rung however (you must, however, contact them), you must release the first rung before touching the third because otherwise you would have violated the requirement of only touching two consecutive levels at once.

But yes, please do look through the Q&A and Rulebook

Re: Climbing

Thank you very much. and what i mean by that is that can you latch you self onto another robot and than climb the pyramid. So can you pull a robot up with you?

Re: Climbing

As far as two robots climbing in tandem (i.e. one latched onto the other), I don't believe would a valid climb for the robot attached to the other unless they themselves climbed the bars as well. I don't believe one can attach to another and have that robot climb the pyramid. It'd be one diesel climbing mechanism to support that much weight however.

Re: Climbing

Unless you are working with another team explicitly for the purposes of designing group-climbing robots, I wouldn't expect any team to trust you to lift their robot... Because if something goes wrong, you can end their competition season in under a second.

Last year you could hardly count on teams to balance on a bridge with you -- I'd be terrified of trusting another team to lift us five feet in the air.

Re: Climbing

Work out the engineering mechanics equations (force, traction, and torque) related to 'just driving up' the pole. I did, and we immediately ruled it out because it appeared unfeasible (but not impossible).

I don't know about you, but I most certainly don't want to help my opponent climb my pyramid.

Sorry, I can't believe I didn't see that. It seemed a little odd that they would say it was illegal to contact within frame perimeter but say that it was fine to lift your partners (in the Q&A). I think I'll just delete that post.
